Quick-Thinking Ormond Beach Marine Saves Lives, Earns Navy Achievement Medal

Photo: Lance Cpl. Jose Villasenore

Lance Cpl. Blake Gonter of Ormond Beach was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal on Oct. 18 for rescuing two people from a flipped car in Hawaii. The accident occurred on April 21 along the H3 highway, where Gonter stopped after spotting debris and the overturned vehicle. He worked with bystanders to free the occupants, including a fellow Marine, and used his flashlight to alert traffic while providing first aid.

Gonter credited his training, including lifeguard and CPR experience, for preparing him to act decisively in the dangerous situation. His actions, which he described as instinctive rather than heroic, prevented further harm and saved lives.

Volusia County Prepares Final Pass for Hurricane Milton Debris Cleanup

Starting Monday, Dec. 2, Volusia County will begin its final collection of vegetative debris from Hurricane Milton along County-maintained roads. Construction debris collection will also start on this date but may occur separately due to FEMA regulations requiring distinct disposal methods.

Residents must place remaining debris curbside by Sunday, Dec. 1, ensuring vegetative debris is separated from construction materials. Mixed piles, bagged debris, electronics, and hazardous items will not be collected. Private roads in unincorporated areas will see a single debris collection pass completed by mid-December.

The County emphasizes hiring licensed professionals for major debris removal and proper disposal at designated facilities. To date, nearly 250,000 cubic yards of vegetative debris have been collected, with FEMA expected to reimburse all related costs.
