Disaster Recovery Center Returns To Daytona Beach Following High Demand

Photo: Volusia County

More than 1,000 residents sought assistance at FEMA’s Disaster Recovery Center in Daytona Beach during its recent operation, underscoring the persistent need for aid following recent disasters. In response to the high turnout, FEMA announced plans to open another center at the John H. Dickerson Community Center in Daytona Beach, located at 308 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. This new location will operate daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Saturday, Nov. 30, through Saturday, Dec. 7.

Currently, a separate Disaster Recovery Center is serving residents at The Center at Deltona, 1640 Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Wednesday, Nov. 27. FEMA officials said demand at this site will be reviewed to determine whether operations will resume there at a later date.

At these centers, individuals can engage directly with FEMA representatives, the U.S. Small Business Administration, and the Red Cross to receive personalized guidance and explore recovery options. Officials have urged residents of Volusia County impacted by recent events to visit a center for assistance if they are unable to access services online.

For those preferring virtual options, applications for assistance can be submitted at www.disasterassistance.gov, via the FEMA mobile app, or by calling 800-621-3362.

Bronze Masterpieces: Seward Johnson Sculpture Tour Arrives in Ormond Beach

City of Ormond Beach

The Seward Johnson "Art Imitates Life" Sculpture Tour has brought 13 bronze sculptures to Ormond Beach, transforming the city into a vibrant open-air gallery. Organized by the Ormond Beach Arts District, the sculptures were installed starting November 20, 2023, following a reception at The Casements to thank sponsors. Ten sculptures were featured at the event before being placed in permanent locations around town. This public art initiative aims to enhance cultural activity and the city’s art collection.

The sculptures will remain on display until April 2025, offering residents and visitors an extended opportunity to enjoy the collection. A map of sculpture locations is available at ormondarts.com. Additionally, the city invites public input on its art initiatives through the Public Art Master Plan survey at obpublicartplan.com. This project reinforces Ormond Beach’s commitment to fostering creativity and celebrating art in public spaces.

Kitchen Fire Shutters Flagler Beach’s Turtle Shack, Investigation Underway

A fire overnight severely damaged the Turtle Shack, a beloved Flagler Beach restaurant, prompting an outpouring of support from the community. Firefighters responded to the scene and stayed into Monday afternoon as the State Fire Marshal prepared to investigate. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as the restaurant was closed for its regular Monday schedule.

Fire Chief Bobby Pace confirmed that the kitchen sustained damage but declined to speculate on the fire’s cause or point of origin, which remain under investigation. Nearby businesses, including the Jose Gaspar Treasure Co. gift shop, were unaffected.

The Turtle Shack’s owners shared their gratitude on social media, thanking the fire department and the community for their support. “Nobody was hurt,” they assured, while acknowledging the need for significant repairs. No reopening date has been set. As news spread, residents offered prayers and well-wishes, emphasizing the restaurant’s central role in the local community.
