Volusia County Awarded $2.5 Million to Restore Coastal Dunes

Volusia County has secured a $2.5 million federal grant aimed at revitalizing its coastal dune ecosystems through the introduction of native vegetation. This initiative, part of a nationwide effort under the National Coastal Resilience Fund, is designed to strengthen natural barriers against storms while improving habitats for endangered wildlife.

The project aligns with the county's upcoming sand placement operations, scheduled to commence early next year. Officials believe this dual approach will not only fortify the dunes but also enhance their ecological role, creating a robust defense system against rising sea levels and severe weather events.

The county plans to incorporate community outreach into the initiative, educating residents about the importance of coastal resilience. This includes highlighting the interconnectedness of dune health, local wildlife habitats, and broader environmental stability.

The National Coastal Resilience Fund is a federal partnership supporting restoration efforts nationwide. Volusia County is among 94 recipients in the program’s 2024 cycle, joining a collective push to safeguard vulnerable coastlines across the country.

Ormond Beach has transformed its downtown with the installation of 11 art wraps on traffic signal and streetlight cabinets. Showcasing works by nine accomplished local artists, the project celebrates Ormond Beach’s creative community and enhances public spaces.

Initiated by the Ormond Beach Arts District and approved by the City Commission, the wraps were installed with support from the Florida Department of Transportation and produced by Beach House Graphics. Each artist donated their work, offering a variety of styles and themes for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Designed to surprise and delight both drivers and pedestrians, the art wraps are part of a three-year display. Organizers hope the initiative will encourage people to explore downtown Ormond Beach and take a closer look at its vibrant artistic offerings.

Volusia Fire Chief Shares Tips to Avoid Thanksgiving Turkey Frying Disasters

Volusia County Fire Rescue demonstrated the dangers of deep-frying frozen turkeys Monday to help residents avoid holiday accidents. At a live event, firefighters showed how oil spills from partially or fully frozen turkeys can ignite into dangerous fires, creating potentially life-threatening situations.

Fire Chief Joe King highlighted the importance of thawing turkeys fully and drying them before frying. For example, a 15-pound bird requires three days to defrost in a refrigerator. King also urged residents to test oil levels in pots with water beforehand, fry outdoors at least 10 feet from structures, and monitor children and pets near the setup.

While propane fryers remain popular, electric alternatives offer safer options, King noted. If a fire occurs, he advised turning off the gas and covering the flames but stressed the importance of calling 911 for assistance. With preparation and care, families can avoid accidents and enjoy a safe holiday meal.
