Flagler Beach Rallies Around Beloved Turtle Shack Restaurant Staff Post-Fire
Turtle Shack Facebook Page
A GoFundMe campaign to support employees of The Turtle Shack, a Flagler Beach restaurant damaged by fire, has raised over $24,000 within days. The fundraiser, started by owner Daniel Niday, aims to help staff cover bills and expenses while the business is closed indefinitely.
With 210 donors contributing as of Thursday morning, the campaign has seen substantial backing, including several $1,000 donations. The Turtle Shack, described as a community hub, has long been cherished by locals. In a statement, its owners emphasized their commitment to supporting employees during this challenging period.
Community solidarity has extended beyond the fundraiser. Johnny D’s Beach Bar & Grill, a nearby restaurant, has pledged to donate 20% of its December 2nd sales to the effort. The funds raised will be distributed directly to employees to assist with their immediate needs.
Hurricane Season Officially Ends November 30: Here’s Why
As November 30th marks the official end of the Atlantic hurricane season, residents along the southeast coast breathe a collective sigh of relief. This date isn’t arbitrary; it reflects the culmination of the annual weather patterns that fuel tropical storm activity.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, encompassing the months when ocean waters are warmest and atmospheric conditions most conducive to storm formation. Hurricanes rely on sea surface temperatures of 80°F or higher, which are prevalent during summer and early fall. By late November, cooling ocean temperatures, shifting wind patterns, and a weaker Intertropical Convergence Zone significantly reduce the likelihood of storm development.
Statistics back this seasonal framework: approximately 97% of Atlantic hurricanes form between June and November, with the season peaking around mid-September. While storms outside this window are rare, they’re not impossible. However, the combination of less energy from cooler waters and increasing wind shear makes such storms less frequent and typically weaker.
The 2024 season was busy — 18 named storms, 11 hurricanes, five of which became major hurricanes. For anyone in Florida, this is going to go down the record books with Debbie, Helene and Milton being the ones that impacted us the most. As the season closes, meteorologists continue monitoring conditions, though the likelihood of new tropical threats dramatically diminishes. For now, it’s a time to regroup and reflect until next year’s season begins anew.
Cucumber Recall Expands Nationwide Over Salmonella Concerns
SunFed Produce, LLC has issued a nationwide recall of whole fresh American cucumbers distributed between October 12 and November 26, citing potential contamination with Salmonella. The cucumbers, shipped under the “SunFed” label or in generic packaging, were distributed across 25 U.S. states, including Florida, California, and New York, as well as several Canadian provinces.
The recall follows reports of salmonellosis illnesses linked to the cucumbers, with cases spanning from mid-October to mid-November. Health officials warn that Salmonella infections can lead to severe symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain, particularly in vulnerable populations like children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. In rare instances, the infection can result in life-threatening complications.
Consumers are urged to check their produce and dispose of or return affected cucumbers. Retailers and foodservice establishments have also been advised to take immediate action to remove the products from circulation. SunFed has initiated outreach to its distribution partners and is cooperating with federal regulators to address the issue.
The recall does not impact other products sold by SunFed. Concerned consumers are encouraged to contact the company’s hotline for further information. SunFed’s Recall Hotline, (888) 542-5849
