Bowman Painting’s fourth annual Bowman Cares Event brought new life to the hall of Seabreeze United Church of Christ in Ormond Beach. The Nov. 2 project was part of the company’s initiative to support nonprofits by enhancing spaces that serve the community. This year’s beneficiary, Charlene’s Dream—a nonprofit helping women diagnosed with cancer—operates a boutique on the church’s campus but identified the church hall as a priority for the renovation.
The church, which charges no rent to the nonprofit, became the focus of Bowman Painting’s team, which believes revitalized environments can inspire hope and uplift spirits. Over a dozen volunteers, including employees and family members, worked to repaint the hall, continuing the tradition of the Bowman Cares Event as a meaningful collaboration between local businesses and nonprofit organizations.
Detroit Mother Convicted After Leaving Toddler on Daytona Beach
Volusia County Branch Jail
Shamika Mitchell, a 38-year-old from Detroit, was convicted last week of unlawful desertion of a child and aggravated child abuse after leaving her toddler on a Daytona Beach shoreline on Nov. 8, 2023. Surveillance footage revealed Mitchell walking her one-year-old son down a beach access staircase before returning moments later without him.
Approximately an hour after the abandonment, a passerby found the child near Main Street and Ocean Avenue, partially submerged in wet sand as waves crashed over his head. Emergency responders revived the unresponsive boy and transported him to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, where he recovered.
Mitchell initially told authorities her son was with his father, but investigators discovered that the father was in Detroit. The Daytona Beach Police Department and Volusia Sheriff’s Office conducted a thorough investigation, culminating in Mitchell’s conviction. She faces up to 35 years in prison for the incident.
Shooting at Ormond-by-the-Sea Airbnb Raises Safety and Oversight Concerns
Volusia County Sheriff
Thanksgiving Day at the Kingston Shores Condominiums in Ormond-by-the-Sea turned chaotic when an Airbnb guest, Joseph DiFusco, opened fire on neighbors, triggering a six-hour standoff with law enforcement. The 56-year-old Connecticut man reportedly fired 200 rounds before being fatally shot by a SWAT sniper. While no one else was injured, the incident has left residents shaken and questioning safety protocols for short-term rentals.
The condo where the shooting occurred was not licensed for short-term rentals, raising questions about oversight of platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo. Both companies allow guests to bring legally-owned firearms if disclosed to hosts, but enforcement relies on self-reporting. Airbnb conducts background checks for some U.S. users, while Vrbo verifies identities but does not explicitly screen for criminal records.
As short-term rentals continue to expand, the lack of stringent regulations and transparency has amplified concerns about the risks posed to communities housing these properties.
