Volusia County Residents Urged to Register for Free Beach Parking

Volusia County residents are reminded to get their free beach pass registration before January 1, 2025.

The Daytona Beach Shores office at 2422 S. Atlantic Avenue remains open Monday through Saturday. Residents may also register online at parkvolusia.org or attend in-person events at regional libraries throughout December. Proof of residency, such as a valid ID and vehicle registration, is required.

Residents can register in person at these locations:

  • Monday, Dec. 9 — Ormond Beach Regional Library, 30 S. Beach St.

  • Tuesday, Dec. 10 — DeLand Regional Library, 130 E. Howry Ave.

  • Wednesday, Dec. 11 — Daytona Beach Regional Library, 105 Jackie Robinson Parkway

  • Monday, Dec. 16 — New Smyrna Beach Regional Library, 1001 S. Dixie Freeway

  • Thursday, Dec. 19 — Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle

Starting January 1, 2025, county-operated off-beach lots will implement parking fees, though registered residents will be exempt. Non-residents can purchase passes via ParkVolusia. While most lots are free for participants, city-managed lots in Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach may still charge fees. Signage will identify eligible parking locations by year-end.

Volusia County Delays Stormwater Fee Decision, Eyes Legislative Funding

Volusia County Council postponed a decision on raising stormwater fees, opting to explore legislative funding for critical infrastructure projects. Residents in unincorporated areas currently pay $8 monthly, up from $6, with studies suggesting increases to $12 or $16 for improved service levels. The council debated an incremental fee hike starting in 2025 to reach $12, potentially boosting annual revenue by $3.1 million. However, members suggested pursuing state funding for watershed studies and reallocating existing resources earmarked for EMS and road projects.

Council Chair Jeff Brower emphasized the urgency of addressing water quality and flooding but faced opposition from members advocating a more cautious approach. The council aims to review funding needs and prioritize projects before revisiting the fee cap. Legislative funding remains uncertain, but officials hope to leverage potential savings to address the county’s aging stormwater management system.

French Electric Plane Maker’s Test Flight Propels Daytona Expansion Plans

Aura Aero, the French electric plane maker, completed its first test flight of the electric Integral E, paving the way for production in Daytona Beach. The company is building a 10,000-square-foot assembly plant at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Research Park to serve North American customers. Expected to open by May 2025, the facility will produce conventional and electric two-seater planes.

Aura Aero is also investing $172 million in a large-scale assembly plant near Daytona Beach International Airport to manufacture its Electric Regional Aircraft (ERA). Slated for completion in 2029, the facility will bring 1,000 jobs to the region, with plans to expand further.

The ERA planes, designed for regional passenger and cargo use, offer a 900-nautical-mile range and quick battery recharge times. Daytona Beach secured Aura Aero’s investment with financial incentives, cementing its role as a key player in the future of electric aviation.
