Volunteers Needed for Final 2024 Beach Cleanup in Volusia
Keep Volusia Beautiful’s final beach cleanup of 2024 is set for Saturday, Dec. 7, from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Winterhaven Park in Ponce Inlet. Located at 4589 S. Atlantic Ave, the meeting spot is across from the 7-Eleven store. Volunteers will receive buckets and grabbers to collect litter along the nearby beach.
Organizers aim to measure the program's success by tallying the debris collected during the cleanup. To ensure enough materials are available, participants are encouraged to RSVP by emailing Lynne Walter at [email protected].
This event provides a chance for community members to end the year by making a positive environmental impact and supporting Keep Volusia Beautiful’s mission to maintain clean, healthy beaches across the county.
Ormond Beach Commission Approves Changes to Ormond Crossings Development

The Ormond Beach City Commission approved amendments to the Ormond Crossings development plan on Dec. 3, adjusting plans for Tract 8 to replace some multifamily units with single-family homes. This 3,000-acre project remains capped at 2,550 residential units and includes a realignment of Tymber Creek Road.
City officials emphasized environmental preservation, including protecting wetlands and incorporating Florida native vegetation in landscaping. Discussions also addressed stormwater management, a proposed K-8 school, and expanded fire services.
Developers committed to avoiding clear-cutting and preserving natural areas, aligning with the city’s push for a greener, more sustainable community. Commissioners thanked the developer for maintaining density limits while focusing on environmental conservation.
Reminder..Historic Casements 46th Annual Gala with Glamorous Theme Starts Tomorrow
The Casements, the historic Ormond Beach home once owned by John D. Rockefeller, is embracing a glamorous "Hollywood Holiday" theme for its 46th annual Christmas Gala. Decorated in black, white, gold, silver, and red, the house has been transformed into a festive tribute to Hollywood, a long-requested theme by a dedicated docent.
The event, organized by The Casements Guild, runs from Dec. 6 to Dec. 8, though the decorations will remain on display throughout December. Guild members have spent nearly a year preparing for the gala, crafting wreaths and cinema-inspired decorations that adorn the home.
This year’s theme brought the Guild's creative talents to the forefront. "Every time you see a wreath, we did it," shared Gala Chairwoman Lee Tisdale, highlighting the efforts of the Guild's crafters who played a pivotal role in designing and producing the decorations.
How to Effectively Handle Chasing Behavior in Dogs
Chasing is a natural instinct for dogs, hardwired from their ancestors who relied on this drive for survival. While domestic dogs don’t need to hunt for food, the urge to chase remains strong and can be directed toward cars, joggers, or even squirrels. This behavior, though natural, can lead to dangerous situations or misunderstandings with people who might see it as aggression.
Immediate Safety Measures
Keep your dog on a leash in public to prevent unexpected chases.
Ensure your yard is securely fenced, with no escape opportunities under or over it.
Understanding and Addressing the Instinct
Recognize prey-driven breeds: Greyhounds and terriers are particularly prone to chasing. These dogs require extra supervision and secure containment.
Provide outlets for the behavior: Activities like fetch or agility training offer safe ways for your dog to express their chasing instincts.
Training Tips for Long-Term Management
Mental and Physical Stimulation: Keep your dog engaged to reduce their urge to find their own outlets for energy.
Controlled Chasing: Play fetch or use toys to direct chasing urges toward acceptable targets. Reward this behavior.
Teach Commands: Prioritize training commands like "come" and "off" to help control impulses.
Add a No-Fail Cue: Develop a special word linked to a high-value reward (like "cheese") to regain their focus in critical moments. Always deliver the promised reward when they respond successfully.
Seek Professional Help: Enlist the support of a reputable trainer, particularly for intense chasers or if you're new to dog training.
Preventing Chasing
Start obedience training early to establish a foundation of respect and impulse control.
Avoid unintentional encouragement. For example, don’t chase your dog if they run off with an object; doing so reinforces the behavior.
While chasing is a natural part of a dog’s instincts, it’s essential to channel this energy in safe, controlled ways. With consistent training, exercise, and supervision, you can manage or even prevent chasing behaviors, keeping your dog safe and well-mannered.
