Pearl Harbor: A Day of Remembrance and Reflection

On December 7, 1941, the calm of a Hawaiian Sunday morning was shattered as Japanese forces launched a devastating surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor. In just two hours, more than 2,400 Americans lost their lives, 21 ships were damaged or destroyed, and the United States was thrust into World War II.

Today, 83 years later, the nation pauses to honor those who perished and to reflect on the resilience that emerged from the ashes of that fateful day. At Pearl Harbor, veterans, families, and officials gather at the USS Arizona Memorial to lay wreaths and observe a moment of silence, remembering the sacrifices of sailors, soldiers, and civilians alike.

The attack not only marked a turning point in history but also galvanized a deeply divided nation. President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s declaration of December 7 as “a date which will live in infamy” still resonates, serving as a solemn reminder of the costs of war and the importance of vigilance.

While the number of survivors dwindles, their stories endure, ensuring that the lessons of Pearl Harbor remain vivid. As America reflects, the commemoration underscores a shared commitment to honoring the past while striving for a more peaceful future.

Photo: Ormond Beach Fire Department

An electrical fire erupted at a residence on Lucky Drive in Ormond Beach on Wednesday, December 4, around 2:30 p.m. According to city officials, the blaze originated on the back porch and swiftly extended into the rear sections of the home. All occupants escaped unharmed. Firefighting units from Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach, and Volusia County responded promptly to contain the situation. In the aftermath, a relative has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist the affected family. Contributions can be made at https://gofund.me/18d822a2.

Flooded Out and Fed Up..Residents Seek Immediate Action in Volusia

Volusia County residents remain frustrated after a town hall meeting on flooding offered few immediate solutions. While officials highlighted long-term plans like updates to the Stormwater Master Plan and engineering studies, many attendees sought specific actions to address current issues. Council Chair Jeff Brower supports a building moratorium to reassess water management, a topic to be discussed at the next meeting on January 14.

Ormond Beach Realtor Faces Charges in Exploitation Scheme

Jason Valiant - Volusia County Sheriff

Ormond Beach Realtor Jason Valiant was arrested for defrauding an elderly couple out of their assets, including three properties valued at $1.6 million. Authorities say Valiant created fraudulent documents to gain control over the couple's finances, drained their accounts, and used their credit cards for personal expenses. A second Realtor, Constance Kellner, is charged as an accessory for aiding in the scheme. Valiant faces multiple felony charges and is held on a $375,000 bond.
