Volusia Sheriff Joins Project Lifesaver After Tragic Autism Deaths

The Volusia Sheriff's Office (VSO) has joined Project Lifesaver, a global initiative to protect individuals prone to wandering due to cognitive conditions like autism. The decision follows the recent drowning deaths of two autistic children in Volusia County: 4-year-old Waylon Childs of Ormond Beach and 7-year-old Charlie Newton of Deltona.

Through a partnership with the Community Partnership for Children, the VSO has acquired 122 tracking devices for the program, enabling quicker location of missing individuals. Families can register for autism safety initiatives via the VSO Autism Awareness Program and access additional resources, such as GPS devices from Halifax Health and Easterseals.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to reduce risks for vulnerable residents. The VSO also offers autism-related car decals to improve interactions between law enforcement and autistic individuals.

Sheriff's Office Reports Deputy's Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

A Volusia County Sheriff's deputy sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg on Saturday at a Walmart on Howland Boulevard in Deltona, according to the sheriff's office. Colleagues at the scene administered immediate aid until emergency medical services arrived. The deputy is expected to recover fully. The sheriff's office expressed relief at her condition and extended wishes for a swift recovery.

Sanchez Tree Farms Brings Holiday Tradition to Life in Ormond Beach

Sanchez Tree Farms has sold over 1,000 Christmas trees since opening their lot at Destination Daytona in Ormond Beach on Nov. 23. Operated by Mary and Esteban Sanchez, the farm offers Fraser firs and white pines from North Carolina, continuing the tradition of Gardner Tree Farms, which closed in 2023.

Esteban, a longtime employee of Gardner Tree Farms, took over the operation at the owner's request, drawing on his 35 years of experience. Since then, the lot has become a hub for families seeking the unmistakable scent and tradition of a real Christmas tree.

Thanksgiving weekend marked a surge in activity, with customers picking out trees from morning until night. With their final truckload now on-site, the Sanchez family expects to remain open until Dec. 20 or until inventory runs out. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

What are Scented Pine Cones

If you grew up in the '80s or early '90s, you might remember bowls of potpourri filled with mini pinecones and colorful wood chips that filled rooms with festive scents. While nostalgic, the ingredients in those potpourris—and even today’s store-bought cinnamon pinecones—can raise questions. What’s really in those scents? For anyone sensitive to artificial fragrances, like myself, the risk of headaches or irritation is a real concern.

Thankfully, making your own cinnamon-scented pinecones is an easy and natural alternative. Using essential oils, you can create a beautiful, rustic home decor item without the mystery chemicals. Arrange your fragrant pinecones in a dining table centerpiece, or pair them with dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and fairy lights for a warm, festive display.

Not only is the cinnamon scent natural and inviting, but this DIY option is also customizable and free from the artificial additives that can accompany store-bought products.
