Ormond Beach will soon showcase a new flower-themed mural at the Art Spotlight gallery, thanks to unanimous approval by the City Commission on Dec. 3. Local artists Thays França and Teri Althouse will paint the mural on all four sides of the gallery, located at 67 W. Granada Blvd. Commissioners praised the project, commending the artists’ vision and its contribution to the city’s cultural vibrancy.
The mural is part of Ormond Beach’s mural program, launched in 2019 to beautify public spaces. Existing murals can be found at locations such as Ormond Garage and Swillerbees Craft Donuts.
Looking ahead, Commissioner Travis Sargent proposed exploring an ocean-themed mural at a beach approach, reflecting community interest in coastal-inspired art. The idea underscores the city’s commitment to fostering creativity and engaging residents in shaping its public spaces.
Daytona Beach Moves to Lift Food Pantry Restrictions for Churches
Daytona Beach is considering a measure to lift restrictions on food pantries operated by churches in redevelopment areas. Since 2011, a city ordinance has prohibited new food pantries in these zones, aiming to support economic revitalization. However, rising food insecurity and legal challenges from local churches have prompted city leaders to reevaluate the policy.
A lawsuit filed by Seventh Day Baptist Church last year highlighted the issue after their food pantry was shut down. While a settlement has been reached, city officials now propose changing the land development code to allow all churches to operate food pantries, regardless of location.
First Christian Church’s pantry, serving over 500 individuals monthly, faced a temporary closure last fall but reopened when officials confirmed it had been grandfathered in. Advocates see the proposal as a step toward addressing food deserts while maintaining redevelopment goals. A second reading is set for Dec. 18.
