Ormond Beach’s European Arts Conservatory Presents Dickens Classic in Ballet Form
The European Performing Arts Conservatory of Ormond Beach will present A Christmas Carol — The Ballet on Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Seabreeze High School Theatre, with shows at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. This production offers a unique take on Charles Dickens’ classic, combining the elegance of ballet with a live narration that guides audiences through Ebenezer Scrooge's journey of redemption.
The performance highlights the talents of dancers who bring beloved characters to life, including Gracyn Thomas as Scrooge and Dion Pratt as Jacob Marley. The Spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future will be portrayed by Hannah Mayall, Stephen D. Andrews, and Emma Billings, respectively. Tickets are $30 and available online at AChristmasCarolBallet.eventbrite.com. With its imaginative storytelling and artistic choreography, the production promises to be a memorable holiday experience for audiences of all ages.
Ormond Beach Police Recognize Top Officer and Civilian for 2024
The Ormond Beach Police Department honored two individuals for their outstanding service at its annual awards ceremony on Dec. 4. Officer Joshua Morris was named Officer of the Year, recognized for his unwavering professionalism and dedication. Colleagues praised his ability to stay positive and helpful under pressure, highlighting his consistent support for team members and commitment to excellence.
Pauline Dulang, the city’s public safety public information officer, was named Civilian of the Year. Though not a department employee, her contributions have been integral to public outreach and communication. Her work in fostering media relationships and providing vital updates through various platforms has strengthened the department’s connection with the community. Dulang’s commitment was especially evident during Hurricane Milton, when she remained at the Emergency Operations Center and documented first responders’ efforts to restore the city.
Both honorees exemplify the values of dedication and service to the Ormond Beach community.
AAA: Florida Gas Prices Likely to Fall Below $3 Again This Month
Florida’s average gas prices briefly fell below $3 per gallon last week, hitting $2.99 on Friday before rebounding to $3.11 by Tuesday, according to AAA. While the statewide average remains above the national average of $3.01, AAA predicts that seasonal factors like reduced demand and higher gasoline supply could push prices back under $3 later this month.
The cheapest gas prices in the state are found in the panhandle, while the Gulf Coast and southern regions tend to run higher. Locally, Flagler County’s average stood at $3.14, slightly above Volusia County’s $3.12 as of Tuesday. For members, BJ’s Wholesale Club in Flagler offered $2.68 per gallon, while Sam’s Club on LPGA Blvd in Volusia had gas for $2.84. Buc-ee’s across from Sam’s Club was competitive but busy.
Despite the fluctuations, Florida drivers may still find bargains with some effort and strategic planning.
Controversy Erupts Over Volusia School Board Chair’s Remarks on Students, Board Practices
Deltona Mayor Santiago Avila Jr. has called for the removal of Volusia County School Board Chair Jessie Thompson after her controversial statements at a national summit. During the event, Thompson disparaged Deltona High students, questioned their 100% graduation rate, and admitted to misleading fellow board members with false data to pass agenda items.
Thompson’s remarks included claims that she fabricated medical conditions to exempt her children from mask mandates during the pandemic and described board member Ruben Colón in a racially insensitive manner, referring to him as a "tan gentleman."
Avila criticized her comments as offensive and unprofessional, urging residents to demand her removal. The local chapter of Moms for Liberty also condemned her statements, distancing themselves from Thompson and describing her behavior as “disgusting and disturbed.” The controversy has raised questions about her leadership and the integrity of the board’s decision-making process.
Gun Control Poll Results
Comments:
“Allow people who are deemed to be a threat to have guns? Are we crazy?”
“Too many killings today. Needs better control. It's so uncomfortable to see someone carrying a gun.”
“No training or review of owners capabilities is required for open carry.”
“That’s ridiculous. There’s too much violence already as well as road rage shootings.”
“Enough guns!”
“Seeing so many people with firearms may make a criminal think twice about doing something evil.”
“Are you kidding me?”
“We need to make sure Rudman is not reelected to any office.”
“Guns are bad for people.”
“Red flag laws are important with the state of today's society.”
