UPDATE: Jessie Thompson Faces Ouster as Volusia School Board Chair
Photo: Volusia County Schools
The Volusia County School Board will discuss removing Jessie Thompson from her role as Chair at its January 14 meeting following widespread criticism of her recent remarks. Thompson faced backlash after questioning the achievements of Deltona High School students during a Moms for Liberty event and describing a colleague, Ruben Colón, in racially charged terms. Colón, who initially supported her appointment, has since expressed disappointment in her leadership, calling for a change. Community members and board members alike have voiced concerns about her suitability to lead.
In response, Thompson apologized for her comments, acknowledging they were poorly worded and expressing her dedication to the district’s students. The Board, which typically appoints its Chair annually in November, agreed to bring the matter forward to January. If removed, Thompson would no longer serve as Chair but would remain a member of the School Board.

SunBros Eyes New Coffee Drive-Thru in Ormond Beach
Ormond Beach may soon welcome a new drive-thru coffee shop as the city’s Planning Board reviews a proposal by Dan Sundell, owner of SunBros Cafe in Flagler Beach. The project, planned for 14 S. Yonge St., seeks to replace the former Massey Auto Brokers building with a 250-square-foot coffee shop. The redevelopment plan requires waivers for landscaping and signage, as well as accommodations for the property’s 50-foot lot width, which does not meet city code standards.
The board will also consider a zoning amendment for “Little Tomoka Village,” a proposed 31-home subdivision that includes plans for a church. Additional agenda items include updates to landscape regulations, discussions on medical marijuana dispensaries, and revisions to Ormond Beach’s 2045 Comprehensive Plan.
