The Ormond Beach Police Department welcomed two new officers, Julio Liriano and Nick Mancuso, at a swearing-in ceremony on Dec. 5. Mancuso, a Palm Coast native and Matanzas High School graduate, served as a military police officer in the U.S. Army, with deployments in South Korea and Germany. After leaving the military in 2023, he began studying early childhood development at Daytona State College.
Liriano, originally from the Dominican Republic, moved to New York City at age 10 and graduated from the High School of Environmental Studies in Manhattan. He relocated to Florida in 2021 and completed training at the Law Enforcement Academy at Daytona State College.
The department expressed excitement over the officers' arrival, highlighting their dedication to serving the community.

Volusia County Schools See Decline in Student Vaping with New Program
AI Generated
Volusia County Schools are reporting a significant drop in student vaping incidents, attributing the success to a newly implemented nine-week educational program. The course, designed to raise awareness about the risks of substance abuse, has reduced the number of students caught with vapes to 360 this year, compared to 463 at the same time last year.
Previously, measures like vape detectors and citations failed to deter repeat offenders. By prioritizing education over punishment, the district hopes to achieve long-term behavioral changes among students.
District officials are encouraged by the program's early success and plan to continue it in the future, aiming to further reduce vaping and create a healthier school environment.
