Ormond Beach Mother Sentenced to 12 Years for Son’s Drowning Death

Myra Santiago, a 24-year-old mother from Ormond Beach, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the aggravated manslaughter of her 3-year-old son, Aziryh, who drowned in a retention pond in April 2023. Santiago, aware of her son’s tendency to wander, failed to install a child lock on her apartment door, citing financial constraints, though police found cash in her home. The night before the tragedy, she left Aziryh alone to go out with her boyfriend, later lying to police about her actions. Surveillance footage showed the toddler near the pond before he drowned.
During sentencing, Circuit Judge Kathryn Weston condemned Santiago’s negligence, calling it “inexcusable.” Santiago, who expressed remorse through a statement, was also sentenced to eight years of probation and mandated mental health treatment. Her defense cited a history of childhood abuse and mental health struggles, but prosecutors emphasized her failure to protect her son and subsequent dishonesty.
Geminids Meteor Shower and Full Cold Moon Light Up Florida Skies This Weekend
AI Generated Image
This weekend, Floridians can enjoy two celestial events: the Geminids meteor shower and December’s full Cold Moon. The Geminids, considered one of the year’s best meteor showers, will remain active through Dec. 24, though the full moon’s bright light may hinder visibility. The Cold Moon reaches its peak at 4:02 a.m. Sunday morning.
The Geminids originate from asteroid 3200 Phaethon, producing bright and colorful meteors that radiate from the constellation Gemini. Under optimal conditions, up to 120 meteors per hour can be seen. For the best viewing, stargazers should head to dark areas away from city lights and allow 20 minutes for their eyes to adjust.
NASA recommends looking away from the full moon to improve visibility and watching during the night or predawn hours, with peak activity expected between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. No special equipment is required, though staying warm is advisable.
Feline Troubles: Keeping Cats Out of the Christmas Tree Safely
AI Generated Image
The allure of a Christmas tree is irresistible—not just for holiday revelers but for their feline companions as well. For cats, a decorated tree is a sensory paradise: dangling ornaments to bat, flickering lights to chase, and an enticing vertical challenge crowned with a shimmering star. Yet this seasonal delight can quickly turn perilous, both for cats and for their owners.
Beyond the frustration of broken ornaments and toppled trees, Christmas trees pose significant risks to cats. From ingesting toxic tree water to chewing through electrical cords, the hazards are numerous. Experts stress that effective solutions lie in proactive management, not punishment.
Placing trees in areas inaccessible to cats, securing them to avoid tipping, and opting for shatterproof decorations are essential steps. Additionally, providing cats with alternative toys and climbing spaces can redirect their curiosity. While sprays and scolding may offer temporary relief, creating a safe, engaging environment ensures a joyful holiday season for all.
