FEMA’s Disaster Recovery Center in Daytona Beach to Remain Open Through December 19

FEMA has again extended the closing date for its Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) at the John H. Dickerson Community Center, 308 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Daytona Beach. Originally scheduled to close on Saturday, Dec. 14, the center will now remain open through Thursday, Dec. 19, to accommodate continued high demand. Operating hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
The DRC offers residents the opportunity to meet face-to-face with representatives from FEMA and partner organizations such as the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Red Cross. These experts provide tailored guidance on recovery resources and assistance programs. FEMA has maintained a DRC presence in Volusia County since Nov. 12.
Volusia County residents impacted by Hurricane Milton are encouraged to visit the center if they have yet to apply for assistance. Applications can also be submitted online at www.disasterassistance.gov, via the FEMA mobile app, or by calling the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362. The deadline to apply for FEMA assistance is Jan. 7, 2025.

Plastics have transformed modern life, but their environmental and health consequences are raising alarm. Scientists warn that microplastics—tiny fragments shed from larger plastic items—are now present in human tissues, including the brain and reproductive organs. These particles, along with harmful additives like phthalates, bisphenols, and PFAS, have been linked to endocrine disruption, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.
While regulatory agencies like the FDA claim the risks are minimal, experts argue the evidence suggests otherwise. Researchers advise consumers to reduce exposure by avoiding plastics marked with recycling codes 3, 6, and 7, using stainless steel cookware, and keeping plastics away from heat. Regular cleaning can also limit microplastics in household dust.
Though eliminating plastic entirely is unrealistic, consumer demand is driving innovation. Experts remain optimistic, believing incremental change can help mitigate the risks of the "Plastic Age."

The Halifax Humane Society’s Paws & Pearls Fur Ball broke fundraising records, raising $537,501 for animal welfare programs in Volusia County. Held on Dec. 5 at the Ocean Center and presented by Subaru of Daytona, the gala surpassed its $400,000 goal, drawing over 600 attendees, including passionate animal advocates and community leaders.
Emmy-winning TV host Brandon McMillan headlined the black-tie event, which also featured awards such as the Animal Hero Award, presented to Michele Connors of S.R. Perrott, and the K9 Officer of the Year Award, given to Senior Deputy Michael Webb and his K9 partner, Aiko.
Proceeds will bolster the Halifax Humane Society’s programs, including veterinary care, fostering, and adoptions. “Each dollar raised ensures that thousands of animals receive the care, love, and second chances they deserve,” said Gala Chairwoman Nancy Lohman.
