Two More Volusia Men Arrested for Roles in January 6th Capitol Riot
Hawks (left in yellow), Padgett (right on green)-U.S. Attorney’s Office, Wash. D.C.
Two Volusia County residents, Jarod Hawks of Port Orange and John Padgett of Edgewater, have been arrested on federal charges for their alleged involvement in the January 6th, 2021, Capitol attack. Authorities accuse the men of violent crimes, including assaulting police officers with a dangerous weapon and dismantling barricades to aid rioters. Surveillance images and tips from private citizens reportedly place Hawks and Padgett at critical moments of the riot, including pushing a large “Trump 2020” sign into Capitol Police. Both men, identified through social media, have extensive criminal histories in Volusia County. Their prosecution is being led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C., in coordination with the FBI. The arrests mark another step in the ongoing federal investigation, which has charged over 1,500 individuals in connection with the attack that sought to disrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election results.
Knee Surgery Doesn’t Stop Seabreeze Soccer Coach From Game Day
Seabreeze High School soccer coach Alex Perez coached his team just hours after undergoing knee replacement surgery on December 12. Unable to walk, Perez directed the Sandcrabs to a 5-1 win over University High School from a pickup truck parked at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
Initially planning to miss the game, Perez changed his mind, feeling a strong responsibility to support his players. With the help of his son, Franco, who drove him to the game, Perez guided the team through phone calls to his assistants and halftime discussions with players.
The victory was a milestone for the team, which has rebounded with three straight wins after a six-game losing streak. Perez, 47, underwent the surgery after years of pain from prior soccer injuries. Despite missing the next game, he plans to resume practices, drawing inspiration from the team’s resilience and determination.
Holiday Travel Alert: Scanning Issues Reported with Florida Driver’s Licenses
The TSA has flagged an issue with certain Florida REAL IDs, particularly those issued in late 2022, which fail to scan properly at airport security checkpoints. This problem has caused delays for travelers, as reported by Cape Coral resident Catherine Spillman, whose ID was flagged at airports in Minnesota and Arizona.
The scanning issue, described as an anomaly by Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, can also affect everyday transactions like alcohol purchases. The state has offered to reissue affected licenses at no charge, but residents say visiting the DMV is an inconvenience.
With the REAL ID Act's May 2025 deadline approaching, which mandates compliant IDs for domestic flights, TSA and Florida officials are urging residents to ensure their IDs are functional. Until then, travelers are advised to carry a passport to avoid potential disruptions during the busy holiday season.
