Board Favors Single-Family Homes Over Apartments in Little Tomoka Village Plan

City of Ormond Beach

The Ormond Beach Planning Board voted 4-2 to recommend approval for a proposed 31-home subdivision on a 50-acre site north of West Granada Boulevard. Known as Little Tomoka Village, the development also includes plans for an Eastern Orthodox church and community center. The rezoning from medium-density residential to a Planned Residential Development would shift the site’s approved use from 50 multifamily units to single-family homes.

While some board members favored homes over apartments, citing the need for housing, residents raised concerns about traffic, flooding, and wildlife. Critics also questioned whether board members with ties to real estate could fairly represent community interests.

The proposal comes as Ormond Beach grapples with development pressures, with some residents starting petitions to slow growth. The project now heads to city officials for final approval amid ongoing debate about the impact of new development on the area’s infrastructure and environment.

Annual Fundraiser at Fletcher’s Irish Pub Supports Children Battling Cancer

Fletcher’s Irish Pub hosted its fifth annual “Shave for the Brave” event, raising funds for the Live Like Cameron Foundation, which supports pediatric oncology patients during the holiday season.

The fundraiser brought together 30 participants who had their facial hair shaved by Proper Barber Co., including the pub’s owner, Bill Fletcher. Alongside donations, the pub contributed 10% of its tips to the cause.

Unusual Visitors: Monkeys Spotted Across Volusia Communities

Orange City Police Dept.

Volusia County residents have reported a series of monkey sightings in communities like Orange City, Deltona, and DeBary, prompting local authorities to issue a public warning. The Orange City Police Department confirmed receiving multiple reports of the animals within city limits and cautioned the public against approaching or feeding them.

The sightings are part of a broader phenomenon in Florida, where nonnative monkey species, such as rhesus macaques, have occasionally been spotted. Most of Florida’s monkey population resides in Silver Springs State Park in Ocala, where the animals were introduced in the 1930s for tourism purposes.

Authorities note that these primates can carry diseases, including herpes B, which poses significant health risks to humans. Feeding or interacting with the monkeys could also lead to aggressive behavior. Residents who encounter the animals are encouraged to contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to report sightings and ensure proper handling.
