Volusia County to Complete Hurricane Milton Debris Collection on Dec. 21

Volusia County

Volusia County will conclude Hurricane Milton debris collection operations on Saturday, Dec. 21. Since operations began on Oct. 18, County crews and contractors have collected over 347,000 cubic yards of debris along 1,100 miles of county-maintained roads and 500 miles of private roads.

The County’s debris hotline will also close on Dec. 21. Residents on County-maintained roads and private roads in unincorporated areas seeking to follow up on a previous debris removal request after this date should contact Volusia County Public Works Administration at 386-736-5965. Representatives are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Unincorporated Volusia County residents must resume following standard garbage and yard waste collection guidelines beginning Sunday, Dec. 22. Guidelines include:

  • Garbage pickup includes the blue 95-gallon cart and up to two additional 32-gallon containers.

  • Yard waste pickup is limited to 4 cubic yards per week. Limbs must not exceed 4 feet in length or 1 foot in diameter. Small debris such as rakings, pinecones, and Spanish moss must be placed in plastic bags or 32-gallon garbage containers.

  • Whole trees cut or blown down are not included in yard debris services.

  • “Bulky” item collection is limited to four pieces per week and includes furniture, mattresses, appliances, carpet, boxes of miscellaneous items, tires (with or without rims), swing sets, water heaters, and equipment. Bulky items will be collected on the scheduled garbage collection day.

  • Carpet must be cut, rolled, and tied or taped into bundles no larger than 4 feet by 8 feet and weighing no more than 60 pounds.

  • Construction and demolition debris, including aluminum siding, tile, screening, and drywall, is not part of normal residential waste collection. Homeowners are responsible for disposing of these items.

Additional guidelines pertaining to garbage, recycling, yard waste, and hazardous waste disposal can be found on Volusia County’s Solid Waste and Recycling Division’s website.

Residents living within municipalities should contact their city or town for debris and waste collection guidelines. For more information, call Volusia County Public Works Administration at 386-736-5965.

Woman Accused in Husband’s Hospital Shooting Faces 55 Years in Prison

The upcoming trial of Ellen Gilland, 78, accused of fatally shooting her terminally ill husband, Jerry, at Advent Daytona Beach hospital (Ormond Beach) in January 2023, is moving forward. At a hearing on Dec. 14, Judge Kathryn Weston mostly denied prosecutors' efforts to exclude defense witnesses, allowing testimony that could bolster claims that Jerry Gilland wanted to end his life. However, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Jeffrey Danziger’s testimony on Jerry’s intent was ruled inadmissible.

Ellen Gilland allegedly shot her husband at AdventHealth Hospital after he could not complete the act himself, according to police. She faces charges including assisting self-murder and multiple counts of aggravated assault, which could result in up to 55 years in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors argue Gilland acted with intent, citing her possession of a firearm and prior planning. Jury selection is scheduled to begin on Jan. 6. Gilland has been out on bond since March.

Chase Leads the Charge: Sandcrabs Top Creek 4-1

Olivia Chase’s hat trick propelled the Seabreeze girls soccer team to a 4-1 victory over rival Spruce Creek on Dec. 16, halting a two-game losing streak. The Sandcrabs improved to 3-5-3, while Creek dropped to 8-4-1. Chase scored early from a penalty kick, followed by a goal from Annabel Thistle to make it 2-0 at halftime. Chase added another goal in the second half before Creek’s Jillian Truax responded, but Chase sealed the win with a late goal.

Chase leads the team with eight goals and three assists this season, continuing her strong partnership with Thistle. Despite losing eight starters to graduation, Seabreeze is battling through a challenging schedule with contributions from freshmen like Ava Arnold and Hunter Byers.

The Sandcrabs now set their sights on New Smyrna Beach on Dec. 19, aiming to dominate locally and make a postseason run, according to coach Eli Freidus.

Amazon Strikes Raise Holiday Delivery Concerns for Florida Shoppers

As Christmas nears, Amazon workers launched strikes at multiple U.S. locations on Dec. 19, potentially threatening holiday deliveries. Led by the Teamsters, the strikes target Amazon’s busiest season, demanding higher wages and better conditions. Despite the action, Amazon claims the strikes will not disrupt deliveries, emphasizing that many striking workers are third-party drivers, not direct employees.

While protests have been reported in New York City, Atlanta, and California, Florida has seen minimal impact. A small demonstration occurred at an Opa-locka facility, but operations continued as usual. Florida’s extensive Amazon network, with over 80 fulfillment and distribution centers, remains key to timely shipments.

The Teamsters represent roughly 10,000 workers—about 1% of Amazon’s hourly workforce—and have established picket lines nationwide. As Amazon accounted for 29% of global online orders during last year’s holiday season, shoppers are watching closely to see if the strikes affect their last-minute deliveries.
