Historic Daytona Ballpark Could Join National Historic Landmark List
Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach, Florida, may soon receive recognition as a National Historic Landmark, following Senate approval of a bill to designate the site as a National Commemorative Site. The bill directs the Department of the Interior to study the ballpark’s eligibility for landmark status, highlighting its significance in the history of Civil Rights and American baseball.
The ballpark’s legacy dates to March 17, 1946, when Jackie Robinson broke professional baseball’s color barrier by playing in an exhibition game there. His courage that day is credited with transforming not only the sport but also the nation’s approach to racial equality.
George Bates, who served as Robinson’s bat boy during that pivotal game, recalls the profound impact of witnessing history unfold. Advocates hope the designation will ensure future generations remember Robinson’s monumental contribution to both baseball and the Civil Rights movement.

From Vet Clinic to Fire Service: One Ormond Beach Firefighter’s Journey of Purpose
For Nicholas Nates, firefighting is both a profession and a purpose. The driver engineer with the Ormond Beach Fire Department has spent seven years honing his skills, earning certifications as a Hazmat and Urban Search and Rescue technician. However, it is his commitment to community service that defines his career.
Nates is widely respected among colleagues for his leadership and mentoring. Described as proactive and hardworking, he views his success as a product of teamwork and the unwavering support of his peers. A lifelong animal lover, Nates is even developing a class for firefighters on rescuing pets during emergencies.
Off-duty, Nates cherishes time with his two black Labradors, whose faces are tattooed on his knees in tribute to his love for animals and firefighting. As he continues to grow in his role, Nates’ focus remains on fostering a department built on collaboration and shared success.
Coach Avery’s Legacy: 25 Years of Dedication to Local Youth
Avery Randolph, known as “Coach Avery,” has spent over 25 years mentoring Ormond Beach’s youth through the Police Athletic League (OBPAL). Since joining in 1998, Randolph has shaped OBPAL’s focus to “building bridges to the next generation,” fostering trust between local youth and law enforcement.
Raised in Pahokee, Florida, Randolph dreamed of an NFL career but shifted his focus to helping others after a concussion ended his football aspirations. His work includes coaching basketball, leading youth programs, and mentoring students at local schools.
Honored as OBPD’s 2023 Civilian of the Year, Randolph’s dedication to OBPAL is evident in his tireless support, from organizing events to attending games on his own time. For him, the reward lies in the gratitude of former participants who return to express their thanks.
Randolph sees his work as a calling, ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed while continuing to build bridges for future generations.
