Ellen Gilland Faces Sentencing in Mercy Killing Case at Daytona Beach Hospital

Ellen Gilland, a 78-year-old Florida woman who gained national attention after a tragic shooting at a Daytona Beach hospital, has entered a plea in court. Authorities said Gilland shot her terminally ill husband at AdventHealth Daytona Beach earlier this year, claiming it was an act of mercy. Following the incident, she allegedly fired in the direction of police officers, prompting a tense standoff.

During a court hearing on December 31, Gilland pleaded no contest to charges connected to the shooting. Judge Kathryn Weston presided over the proceedings. As part of a plea agreement, Gilland now faces a sentencing range from probation to up to 10 years in prison. Her sentencing is scheduled for February, and the case has continued to spark debate about end-of-life care and its legal ramifications.

Looking For A Sailboat? Here’s One For $1!

Captain Allan Askar’s sailing adventure from St. Augustine to the Dominican Republic came to an abrupt halt on December 22 after a grueling encounter with rough waters off Florida’s coast. Battling relentless waves and high winds for 16 hours, Askar was physically drained. Hoping for a reprieve, he anchored his 1977 sailboat and rested, unaware of what would come next.

The vessel, however, didn’t hold its position. It drifted ashore at New Smyrna Beach, where it quickly became an impromptu tourist attraction. Locals marveled at the stranded boat, with some families bringing their children to see it up close.

But for Askar, the grounded sailboat presents a costly dilemma. Salvage efforts by land are estimated at $20,000 to $25,000—an expense he is unable to shoulder. As a last resort, he listed the boat for sale on Craigslist for just one dollar, hoping someone might take it off his hands and cover the removal costs.

After Beach Re-nourishment, Shell Hunters Strike Gold in Flagler Beach

Theresa Wilkinson of Jacksonville has turned Flagler Beach into her personal treasure-hunting ground, digging for prized seashells uncovered by a recent beach re-nourishment project. Armed with shovels, sieves, and her faithful Schnauzer, Coco, Wilkinson searches for conchs, shark eyes, and scalloped flats, which she describes as particularly hard to find.

The project, which deposited over 1.31 million cubic yards of offshore sand along the beach, has provided an unexpected windfall for shell enthusiasts like Wilkinson. Retired from the construction industry, she balances her passion for shelling with caring for animals at her farm.

While her activities occasionally draw curious onlookers—and even police responding to a misunderstanding—Wilkinson enjoys sharing her finds. She often leaves shells for others or sends them to family in Alabama, sharing her love for Florida’s coastal beauty. “Shelling gives me a great day,” she says, embodying the joy of life by the sea.
