Visitors Flock to Blue Spring to Witness Manatees and Winter Wildlife

Photo: MyNews13

Blue Spring State Park in Volusia County has become a winter haven for hundreds of manatees seeking warmth as the St. Johns River temperatures drop below 68 degrees. With the spring maintaining a constant 72 degrees, the park offers an essential sanctuary where manatees can rest, conserve energy, and nurse their calves.

In December, researchers counted 325 manatees, including a near-record 90 calves. The Save the Manatee Club and park officials conduct daily counts to monitor the population, identifying individual manatees by their unique scars.

The park, which attracts over 700,000 annual visitors, features boardwalks and viewing stations that allow guests to observe the manatees and other wildlife, such as fish and herons. Admission costs $6 per vehicle or $2 for pedestrians and cyclists.

During winter, the park often reaches capacity due to high demand, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience Florida’s iconic wildlife.
