Biden Signs Act Honoring Jackie Robinson Ballpark as National Commemorative Site
President Joe Biden signed the "Jackie Robinson Ballpark National Commemorative Site Act," officially designating the historic Daytona Beach stadium as a National Commemorative Site and part of the African American Civil Rights Network. The ballpark is renowned as the site of Jackie Robinson’s first professional baseball game on March 17, 1946, where he broke baseball’s color barrier.
Opened in 1914, the stadium now houses the Daytona Tortugas, a minor league team. The legislation also calls for a feasibility study to evaluate its designation as a National Historic Landmark. Although already on the National Registry of Historic Places since 1998, this new recognition highlights the ballpark’s significance.
Bipartisan support from lawmakers and endorsements from baseball organizations helped advance the bill, furthering efforts to honor Robinson’s groundbreaking legacy in civil rights and professional sports.
Florida’s new social media law, effective January 1, restricts access for minors under 18. Children under 14 are prohibited from having accounts, while 14- and 15-year-olds require parental consent. Social media companies must delete non-compliant accounts and associated data within 90 days.
The law also blocks minors from accessing content deemed “harmful,” such as pornography, requiring age verification by third-party systems with no data retention. Enforcement begins in February but faces two legal challenges. Tech groups argue the law infringes on free speech, while adult content advocates claim it hinders access to educational materials.
With steep penalties for violations, the law could impact platforms with addictive features like infinite scrolling or push notifications. Exemptions exist for private messaging services.
Part of a nationwide push to limit minors’ online activity, the law has bipartisan support but raises questions about enforceability and its broader implications for users and platforms.

Cold Snap Tips: Shielding Your Garden from Frost Damage
With wind chills expected to drop into the 30s across parts of Central Florida, residents may need to take precautions to shield their plants from frost damage. Here’s how to do it right:
Step 1: Water Early
Water your plants the morning or evening before frost arrives—never right before freezing temperatures. Moisture absorbed ahead of time helps plants stay hydrated during the cold but avoid leaving them wet overnight, as this can cause damage.
Step 2: Bring Plants Indoors
For potted plants, move them indoors if possible. A living room or even a garage, which stays above freezing, provides better protection than outdoors.
Step 3: Cover Outdoor Plants
For plants that can’t be moved, use a frost cloth available at home improvement stores. These breathable covers allow sunlight in and can remain in place for up to 10 days. Blankets work too but must be removed each morning. Avoid plastic coverings, which trap moisture and harm plants.
Secure the cloth at the base of the plant, ensuring it covers from top to bottom to trap soil heat, which helps keep the plant warm. For extra stability, use garden stakes to hold the covering in place.
As the cold approaches, a little preparation can go a long way in preserving your plants.
