Bob Watson, a retired U.S. Marine Corps veteran and director of Volusia County Veteran Services, retired on Jan. 3 after seven years of service. Honored at a ceremony in DeLand’s Veterans Plaza, Watson was recognized for his contributions to the county’s veteran community. The event, attended by local officials and Florida Sen. Tom Wright, included the presentation of a quilt from Quilts of Valor, an organization that honors veterans nationwide.

During his tenure, Watson was instrumental in expanding access to benefits and services for local veterans. County officials credited him with helping double the number of veterans served annually. Watson’s commitment to addressing the needs of Volusia County’s veteran population left a lasting legacy, reflecting his dedication both as a military service member and public servant.

Frigid Week Ahead for Volusia and Flagler Counties

Frigid temperatures gripped Volusia and Flagler counties Tuesday morning, with Daytona Beach reporting a low of 38 degrees and a wind chill of 30. Other localities, including Ormond Beach and Palm Coast, experienced similarly chilly conditions, with wind chills in the low 30s.

The cold snap is expected to linger through the week, with the National Weather Service forecasting below-average temperatures and overnight lows ranging from the mid-30s to 40 degrees. Wind chill values are likely to dip into the upper 20s to low 30s, particularly on Thursday morning.

Patchy frost is forecast inland and north of I-4 each morning through Friday, while extended forecasts suggest the cold could persist into next week. Beachgoers are also advised to stay vigilant, as rip currents and strong longshore currents pose risks along Central Florida’s Atlantic coast.

It Can Be Done-Edgewater Votes to Suspend Development, Focus on Flooding Solutions

The Edgewater City Council approved a temporary development moratorium to address ongoing flooding issues, voting 3-1 after an emotionally charged meeting on Tuesday. Mayor Diezel DePew, who backed the measure, described it as a necessary step to give the city breathing room to reevaluate its stormwater infrastructure and regulations. The moratorium took effect immediately, along with a unanimous vote to pause building permits in flood-prone Florida Shores.

Councilwoman Debbie Dolbow opposed the plan, citing concerns about its financial implications, including potential tax increases. Residents, many wearing “Make Edgewater dry again” shirts, shared harrowing stories of repeated flood damage, urging the council to act decisively.

The city is awaiting the completion of a stormwater master plan by Jones Edmunds and Associates, which will provide recommendations for improving its infrastructure. Volusia County Council is set to discuss a broader residential development moratorium on Jan. 14.
