Ormond Beach Approves First Drive-Thru Coffee Shop Amid Traffic Concerns

Ormond Beach’s City Commission approved plans on Jan. 7 for its first drive-thru-only coffee shop. The 4-1 vote allows Ellianos Coffee, an 800-square-foot franchise, to open in the former Winn-Dixie parking lot on West Granada Boulevard, despite concerns raised by the Planning Board over traffic congestion.

Two waivers were granted to the property owner: one to improve landscaping buffers and another to reduce vehicle stacking requirements in the drive-thru lanes. While supporters on the commission praised the project as a modern addition, critics, including Commissioner Harold Briley, worried about potential traffic issues in the shared parking lot.

Ellianos Coffee will operate next to Taco Bell and a future Aldi supermarket. City officials stated that drive-thru access will be limited to the parking lot, minimizing traffic disruptions on Granada Boulevard. The coffee shop chain has a history of revitalizing underused shopping centers across the Southeast.

City Targets Playground Upgrades at Key Ormond Beach Locations

Ormond Beach is set to address several playgrounds in need of repairs or replacements this year, prioritizing public safety and hurricane recovery efforts.

The city announced plans to replace the playground at Andy Romano Beachfront Park, which was damaged during Hurricane Milton and remains closed. This project will coincide with repairs to the park’s seawall, a $2.1 million project coming in under budget and awaiting City Commission approval. The 12-year-old playground has visible damage, prompting city officials to prioritize its replacement.

In addition, the city will replace the playground at Fire Station 91 and repair the Magic Forest Playground at Nova Community Park, which also sustained significant hurricane damage. Repairs at Magic Forest are expected to begin within two weeks and will take six weeks, completed by the original contractor.

Officials expressed optimism about restoring these spaces, emphasizing their importance to the community.

Volusia School Board Chair Resigns Following Controversial Remarks

Jessie Thompson - Volusia County Schools

Jessie Thompson resigned as chair of the Volusia County School Board on January 2 but will remain a board member, following backlash over controversial remarks at a Moms for Liberty summit.

At the event, Thompson equated Deltona High School diplomas to "participation trophies" and made racially charged comments about board member Ruben Colón. These remarks, along with her admission of misleading fellow board members to push through her agenda, led to public outcry and calls for her removal, including from Deltona’s mayor.

Facing an upcoming meeting to reconsider her chairmanship, Thompson stepped down, stating her decision followed prayerful reflection. She expressed her intent to continue advocating for students, teachers, and parents. However, her comments have intensified discussions around accountability and leadership within the school board.
