Cold Snap Continues: Temperatures Drop Below Freezing Across Volusia, Flagler
National Weather Service
Volusia and Flagler counties faced their coldest night of the season Thursday, with temperatures dropping near freezing and wind chills plunging into the 20s. Daytona Beach recorded a low of 35 degrees and a wind chill of 28, marking the winter’s coldest readings so far. Similar frigid conditions were reported throughout the region, including a low of 33 degrees in DeLand and 34 degrees in Flagler County.
A freeze warning was in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday, and northwest winds amplified the chill, creating wind chills in the low 20s to low 30s. Patchy frost developed in sheltered areas.
Temperatures will remain cold, with lows in the mid-30s to low 40s through Friday morning and another strong cold front expected this weekend. Rain is likely Saturday morning, and temperatures will drop again Sunday, with highs in the low 60s and overnight lows in the upper 30s to low 40s continuing into next week.

Re-elected Volusia Council Members Set Tone for Cooperation
Volusia County Council Chair Jeff Brower and fellow council members Troy Kent and Matt Reinhart were sworn in Thursday for new four-year terms, with Brower urging the council to prioritize mutual respect and constructive dialogue. Addressing his colleagues, Brower called for “a year of respect” to guide their work, emphasizing the importance of fostering an environment where all voices are heard.
Reinhart, who will also serve as vice chair, echoed the need for collaboration, acknowledging the challenges the council faces and the difficult decisions ahead. Councilman David Santiago and Troy Kent both voiced support for Brower’s vision, citing the importance of cohesion in tackling the needs of Volusia County residents.

Volusia County Awarded $133.5 Million for Hurricane Milton Recovery
Volusia County has been awarded $133.5 million in federal disaster recovery funds to aid recovery from Hurricane Milton. Provided through HUD's Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery program, the funds will support long-term recovery, housing restoration, and economic revitalization in the county's hardest-hit areas.
The funding will address critical needs, including replacing damaged affordable housing, repairing infrastructure, and assisting small businesses. It will also be used to create jobs and implement disaster mitigation measures to bolster the county against future storms.
The county’s Transform386 program, which previously managed $329 million in Hurricane Ian relief funds, will oversee these new resources. County officials are crafting an action plan for fund allocation, with public meetings planned to gather community input. The plan will require approval from both the County Council and HUD.
Officials say the funds represent a significant step toward rebuilding and fortifying Volusia County’s infrastructure and communities.
Deep Creek Preserve to Grow by 1,300 Acres with State-Approved Land Purchase
Volusia County’s Deep Creek Preserve will expand by over 1,300 acres after Florida officials approved a major land purchase. The acquisition, funded through the state’s Forever Florida program, increases the preserve to 9,395 acres and enhances the Volusia Conservation Corridor, a critical area for biodiversity and ecological health.
The $18.5 million purchase, known as Carter Quail Ranch, was highlighted as a priority by Volusia County due to its role in protecting essential water filtration areas and floodplains. County officials lauded the collaboration between state and federal agencies, which has allowed for the conservation of more than 5,500 acres since 2021.
The USDA’s Rural Conservation Partnership Program also contributed $20 million toward preserving farmland and reducing flood risks in the county. Officials emphasized the long-term benefits of these efforts for environmental preservation and resilience against future climate challenges.
