Daytona Beach Honors Martin Luther King, Jr. with Weekend Events

Daytona Beach will honor Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 96th birthday with a weekend of celebrations. Events begin Saturday with the MLK Banquet and Scholarship Awards at the Hard Rock Hotel Daytona, recognizing local students for their academic accomplishments.

On Sunday, attendees can reflect on King’s impact at the "7 Words from the King" program held at Masters Domain Church of God in Christ.

Monday’s festivities start with a community breakfast at the Julia T. & Charles W. Cherry, Sr., Cultural and Educational Center. At 9:45 a.m., the MLK Walk, led by local civic leaders and organizations, will take place. A community festival originally scheduled for Daisy Stocking Park has been canceled, but a screening of The Six Triple Eight will be held at 11 a.m. at the Cherry Center, free of charge.

This series of events celebrates King’s enduring legacy and his impact on civil rights and social justice.

Florida Among Worst States for Growing Odometer Rollback Fraud

Odometer fraud is on the rise, with scammers exploiting technology to manipulate mileage on used cars, costing Americans an estimated $1 billion annually. Florida ranks among the worst states, with 85,000 new cases reported each year.

A recent federal case highlighted the issue when Drew Mitchell Schreiber, former owner of Central Florida Automotive Group, pled guilty to rolling back odometers on over 140 vehicles. Schreiber reportedly made $600,000 in illegal profits and faces up to nine years in prison.

Devices meant for legitimate vehicle repairs are being misused to alter odometers in seconds, making detection challenging. Consumer advocates urge buyers to request vehicle history reports and get vehicles inspected before purchase. Fraudulent odometers can lead buyers to overpay by an average of $4,000 per vehicle.

As odometer scams grow more sophisticated, vigilance is key to protecting yourself from these costly schemes.

What’s Edgewater Doing About Flooding And Building?

Edgewater has implemented a moratorium on new impermeable structures until January 5, 2026, aiming to address stormwater management and development concerns. The 3-1 decision, with Councilwoman Debbie Dolbow opposing, exempts areas like the Park Avenue and Ridgewood Corridors but excludes charitable organizations such as Habitat for Humanity.

Ongoing residential projects, including 4,000 approved units and 11,400 additional homes, will continue unaffected. Development Services Director Ryan Solstice explained that exemptions were based on zoning and land use considerations, while Mayor Diezel Depew highlighted the city’s need to overhaul its 25-year-old land development codes.

The decision follows increasing public concern over flooding caused by recent hurricanes and outdated infrastructure. Mayor Depew described the moratorium as a “necessary pause” to allow the city to repair infrastructure, update policies, and hire critical staff. Public support has largely favored the initiative, with residents urging the council to prioritize sustainable growth.
