Nonprofits Unite at Tomoka State Park to Tackle Conservation Challenges

Tomoka State Park hosted the Clean Earth Initiatives Conservation Breakfast on January 16, an event that united 18 nonprofits from Flagler, Volusia, and Brevard counties to promote collaboration in addressing conservation challenges. Attended by local officials, including Volusia County Council Chair Jeff Brower, the breakfast showcased key initiatives aimed at preserving Florida's ecosystems.

Projects featured included the Friends of Blue Springs State Park's "Rolling Hikes" program, which provides accessible hiking experiences for individuals with mobility challenges, and the Brevard Zoo’s new aquarium plans. The Sea Turtle Preservation Society highlighted efforts to respond to sea turtle strandings, while the Florida Bat Conservancy discussed the detrimental impacts of pesticides and habitat loss on local bat populations. The event also provided a platform for 101 Paws and Claws, a sanctuary for abandoned exotic animals in Deltona.

The event emphasized the importance of community-driven action to support regional environmental health.

Florida in Focus: Trump’s Pardon Pledge for Jan. 6 Rioters Draws Attention

Florida continues to play a central role in the aftermath of the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, with over 140 individuals from the state facing federal charges related to the event. As former President Donald Trump prepares to return to the White House following his re-election, his pledge to issue “major pardons” for those convicted or charged in connection with the Capitol riots is under scrutiny, particularly in Florida, which has seen some of the most high-profile cases.

Nearly 1,600 people have been charged nationwide, with over 645 sentenced to prison for offenses ranging from trespassing to seditious conspiracy. Notable Florida cases include Enrique Tarrio, the Proud Boys' former leader, sentenced to 22 years, and Ormond Beach resident Joe Biggs, who received 17 years.

While Trump has characterized these individuals as “political prisoners,” his promise to review their cases raises questions about the implications of such actions on justice and accountability.
