Volusia County Schools Roll Out Bikes to Tackle Chronic Absenteeism

Volusia County Schools is addressing chronic absenteeism with an innovative approach: providing bicycles to students. Chronic absenteeism, defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, affects nearly one-third of the district's students and millions nationwide. A state law prohibiting bus service for students living within two miles of school exacerbates the issue.
With funding from AdventHealth and East Volusia Market, the district distributed 170 bikes and helmets to students identified as at-risk for absenteeism. Beyond solving transportation challenges, the program encourages physical activity, which can improve focus and energy for learning.
However, safety remains a concern in Central Florida, one of the most dangerous regions for cyclists. The program incorporates helmets and safety training to mitigate risks. The district aims to cut absenteeism by 10% by the 2024-2025 school year, with early results showing a 5% improvement. Success could position the program as a national model.

Happy Co., a new café in Ormond-by-the-Sea, has transformed a former bank at 1210 Ocean Shore Blvd. into a vibrant coffee spot. Open since mid-January, the café celebrated its grand opening with live music, local vendors, and a surfboard giveaway. Its menu features specialty coffee, smoothies, bagels, acai bowls, and avocado toast, appealing to those seeking both quality and a relaxed beachside vibe.
The café underwent extensive renovations last year, reimagining the space to align with its organic, community-focused ethos. This addition to the growing specialty coffee scene joins recent openings like Aguadulce in South Daytona and Aura in Holly Hill, alongside established favorites such as Gold Leaf and Copperline.
Happy Co. invites locals and visitors alike to enjoy its cozy atmosphere and discover if the café meets its mission of creating a welcoming retreat. It operates Monday through Saturday, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
