Founders of Pictona "Unretire" to Resume Management Roles

Rainer & Julie Martens

Rainer and Julie Martens, the founders of the Pictona pickleball complex, have come out of retirement to resume their roles in managing the facility. The couple, aged 82 and 75 respectively, had retired six months prior but decided to return to oversee the 49-court complex's operations, sources indicate. Their return was announced in a January newsletter by the non-profit organization. This decision became permanent a week later, with the board's consent.

The Martens' decision to return was prompted by the surprise departure of John Phillips, the former athletic director for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, who had taken over as CEO in July 2024. The couple is expected to stay on for up to two more years.

Pickleball, a sport that has seen a surge in popularity recently, particularly among seniors, is a combination of tennis and table tennis. Pictona, which opened in 2020, has become a hub for the sport's enthusiasts in the greater Daytona Beach area.

Penske Team Dominates 2025 Rolex 24 at Daytona

The 63rd Rolex 24 at Daytona proved to be a riveting event, with Team Penske and Porsche securing remarkable victories. According to sources, the dramatic event was reminiscent of the excitement Daytona is known for, with an intense final hour that saw the top three positions decided in the last few minutes.

Felipe Nasr and Matt Campbell, driving for Penske Porsche, battled for the lead, with Nasr eventually taking the win. British racer Nick Tandy, part of the winning team, made history by becoming the first driver to win the four major 24-hour endurance races.

In other categories, Sebastian Bourdais led the Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2) group, securing a significant margin of victory. The GTD Pro and GTD classes also saw new champions, rounding off an eventful and thrilling race.

Flagler Beach Approves $14 Million for New Pier Construction

The Flagler Beach City Commission has unanimously given the green light to Vecellio & Grogan for the construction of a new, stronger, and taller pier, following a $14 million bid. The project, which will replace the previous pier damaged by Tropical Storm Ian in 2022, is set to commence in spring, with hopeful completion by July Fourth, 2026, according to sources. Funding for the new pier is expected to come from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The project also involves creating a temporary trestle for demolition and construction purposes. However, the construction will result in reduced parking near the pier and possible temporary beach access restrictions. Local officials believe the project won't significantly impact tourism, as beachgoers will still have plenty of beach to enjoy during the construction phase.
