Ormond Beach Mayor Sets Priorities in First Months of Tenure

Mayor Jason Leslie - City of Ormond Beach

In his initial months in office, Ormond Beach Mayor Jason Leslie has been busy adjusting to his new role, according to sources. Early on, Leslie held a community event titled "Coffee with Mayor Leslie", which was well attended by local residents and featured guest speakers.

The Mayor's primary goal is reportedly to attract more high-paying jobs to the area, aiming to help residents afford the steep housing prices in the locality. A project, Little Tomoka Village development, was recently declined by the City Commission due to concerns about potential flooding.

The city's decision to remove fluoride from the water supply will be reconsidered in future commission meetings, as it sparked concerns among some local citizens. Mayor Leslie is said to be in favor of public comment and feedback in these matters.

A proposal for a new emergency operations center and an enhanced police station is moving forward, with the Mayor stressing the significance of public safety.

The mayor is also reportedly supportive of changing development policies to better suit the current needs of the city, emphasizing smart growth and low-impact development. He envisions Ormond Beach as a 'special place' and aims to keep it that way.

Holly Hill Resident Shoots Car Charger Theft Suspect

A Holly Hill resident, identified as Ivan Arsenault, 66, has been charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, following an incident where he pursued and shot a man suspected of stealing a car charger from his vehicle, according to Ormond Beach police. Sources say the suspect had approached Arsenault's residence asking for assistance to start his vehicle, but after being refused, he allegedly stole a charger and fled. Arsenault, unable to pursue on foot due to an old injury, used his Ford F150 pickup truck to chase and ram the suspect.

In his attempt to perform a citizen's arrest, Arsenault struggled with the suspect, leading to the discharge of his firearm. Witnesses reported that Arsenault justified his actions by claiming the suspect was a vagrant and a waste of taxpayers' money. The suspect, found with a gunshot wound on his right thigh, was discovered wearing a bulletproof vest.

Charles "Granite Gangster" Ogden Sues Volusia City Amid Fraud and Theft Charges

Charles Darrel Ogden, Sr., also known as the "Granite Gangster", has lodged a lawsuit against the City of Port Orange, alleging 'negligent supervision' of police detective Lance Morris. According to sources, Ogden, who is currently facing fraud and theft criminal charges, claims that one of the felony counts against him—operating a contracting business without a certification during an emergency—stems from an error made by Det. Morris.

The lawsuit is part of a broader case in which Ogden is accused of defrauding four victims, including Port Orange resident Melanie Cain, who alleges that Ogden's company began work on her home after it was damaged during Hurricane Ian in September 2022, but failed to complete the job. Sources reveal that Ogden is demanding over $50,000 in damages from Port Orange, claiming that the contract Cain signed was with a business owned by his son and not him.

Ogden has also filed lawsuits against the four victims in his criminal case, alleging they libeled and/or slandered him, according to sources.
