Volusia County Task Force Cracks Down on Major Drug Trafficker

Authorities in Daytona Beach have arrested Alvin P. Davis, a key narcotics supplier, as part of a major drug trafficking investigation. The operation led to the seizure of 6 kilograms of cocaine and 15 pounds of methamphetamine. Davis, a Jamaican national in the U.S. on a work visa, was apprehended Monday after surveillance observed him handling suspected drug packages at Volusia Mall.

The arrest follows an earlier raid in October on Pelican Bay Road, where detectives seized over 18 kilograms of powder cocaine and other illicit substances. A search of a Port Orange property linked to Davis uncovered cash and drug-trafficking materials.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) placed a detainer on Davis to revoke his legal status and initiate deportation proceedings. The East Volusia Narcotics Task Force, comprising local and federal agencies, conducted the operation as part of an ongoing effort to combat narcotics distribution in the region.

Special Election Looms in Florida’s 6th: Fine and Weil Set to Compete

The stage is set for the special election to fill Florida's 6th congressional district seat after primary victories on Tuesday. Randy Fine, a Republican state legislator, easily defeated his challengers with 83% of the vote, while Democratic contender Josh Weil, an educator, won 60.8% of his party’s vote against Gus Selmont.

The seat became vacant following Michael Waltz's departure to join Donald Trump’s national security team. Libertarian Andrew Parrott and independent candidate Randall Terry will join Fine and Weil on the April 1st ballot, while Chuck Sheridan is conducting a write-in campaign.

Though the district has consistently leaned Republican, Weil's campaign has demonstrated notable organizational strength. Fine, a staunch Trump ally, highlighted his conservative platform as a key pillar of his candidacy. Weil, emphasizing a broad appeal, promised to represent the needs of all constituents, regardless of political affiliation.

Volusia Schools Achieve 93.7% Graduation Rate, Among Top in Florida

Volusia County Schools reported a graduation rate of 93.7% for the 2023-2024 school year, up from 84.5% in 2018-2019 and significantly higher than the district's 71.6% low in 2017-2018. The achievement places the district among Florida’s top 10 in graduation rates, with nine out of ten high schools posting gains.

Deltona High School reached a 100% graduation rate, while Pine Ridge High School had the largest one-year increase at 4.4%. School officials credited multiple pathways for student success, including career education programs, advanced curriculum options, and dual enrollment opportunities.

The milestone comes after School Board member Jessie Thompson’s controversial comments at a Moms for Liberty event questioning the district's graduation metrics. Thompson has since apologized and resigned as board chair.

School leaders emphasized the significance of the gains, framing them as a testament to student perseverance and the district's tailored approach to supporting educational success.
