Tragic Dog Attack Spurs Research Collaboration with Harvard University

Volusia County Animal Services euthanized two dogs on Jan. 30 after they fatally mauled 8-year-old Michael Millett earlier this month. The tragedy occurred in a rural area near DeLand on Jan. 13 when Millett, riding his bike with a friend, stopped to pet one of the dogs. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following a mandatory 10-business-day quarantine period, the dogs were euthanized as the owner neither surrendered them nor appealed. County officials expressed their condolences and reaffirmed the importance of public safety in response to aggressive animal behavior.

In an effort to further research canine aggression, Volusia County is collaborating with Harvard University's Canine Brain Research Group by providing forensic evidence from the case. Authorities urge residents to report aggressive animal behavior to ensure community safety and remain committed to supporting the ongoing investigation by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

Embry-Riddle Graduate, Ormond Beach Resident Among Victims in Deadly Washington Air Collision

Jonathan Jay Campos, a 2015 graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and former Ormond Beach resident, was identified as one of the pilots aboard American Airlines Flight 5342. The plane collided midair with a military helicopter near Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, killing all 67 people aboard both aircraft, including three soldiers in the helicopter.

Embry-Riddle officials expressed their condolences, describing Campos as a skilled pilot and valued alumnus. The crash is the deadliest U.S. air disaster since 2001 and is under investigation. Preliminary findings revealed that only one air traffic controller was managing a station that typically requires two personnel.

Rescue operations have shifted to recovery efforts, with search teams continuing to scour the icy waters of the Potomac River, where the wreckage of both the plane and helicopter was found. Federal officials are investigating the sequence of events leading to the collision.

SpaceX Falcon 9 Booster Retired After Final Mission Launching SpainSat NG I

SpaceX launched the Hisdesat SpainSat Next Generation I satellite aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center Wednesday night, marking the final flight for the booster, which completed 20 missions, including 13 Starlink launches.

The European Space Agency (ESA) stated that the satellite will enhance secure communication services for governments and emergency response teams across Europe, the Americas, and beyond. The satellite’s advanced antenna system enables real-time coverage adjustments to maintain reliable communications.

Due to the high-performance requirements of this mission, SpaceX confirmed that the Falcon 9 first-stage booster will be retired.

The satellite is headed for geostationary orbit, roughly 22,236 miles above Earth, where it will serve as a key communication asset for years to come, strengthening Europe's space-based infrastructure.

Halifax Humane Society Thrift Store Shifts Focus to Higher-Value Items

The Halifax Humane Society (HHS) thrift store has shifted its business model, discontinuing a focus on clothing sales to prioritize furniture, pet supplies, and household goods. The decision, led by CEO Sean Hawkins, aims to maximize financial impact for animal welfare. Processing clothing donations was labor-intensive and yielded low returns compared to larger items like furniture, which sell for significantly higher prices.

Thrift manager Suzanne Zappala highlighted storage and safety concerns caused by an influx of clothing donations, sometimes exceeding 100 bags on holiday weekends. She addressed social media claims of discarded items, stating that only unsellable goods are thrown away. Clothing is responsibly redonated to other thrift stores or liquidation services.

The store hopes to raise $505,000 this year for HHS and seeks community support through donations and volunteer efforts, emphasizing that their work ultimately benefits the animals.
