Ormond Beach Advances Native Plant Requirements for Development

AI image
Ormond Beach is advancing an environmental initiative to require native plants in development landscapes. On January 21, the City Commission unanimously approved an amendment to its Land Development Code, mandating at least 50% native plantings in new developments. A second reading is scheduled for February 4. The move responds to calls from environmental advocates who have long sought stricter native plant regulations to protect local ecosystems. The amendment builds on existing requirements for replacement trees and drought-tolerant landscaping. Local environmental groups, including the Halifax River Audubon and the Florida Native Plant Society, played a key role in shaping the proposal. Supporters see the change as a significant step toward habitat preservation and environmental resilience amid ongoing development pressures. Proponents hope it will encourage residents to view native vegetation as an integral part of Florida’s beauty rather than an inconvenience.

Former Volusia County Teacher Arrested Over Alleged Student Relationship

Patrick Gringras - Volusia County Branch Jail
Patrick Gingras, a former teacher at Taylor Middle High School in Pierson, Florida, has been arrested for allegedly engaging in an inappropriate relationship with an 18-year-old student. The investigation by the Volusia County Sheriff's Office began nearly a year ago after concerns were raised by school staff. Although the student initially denied the relationship, evidence was reportedly found through cell phone communications. The Volusia County School District placed Gingras on leave during the investigation and later decided not to renew his contract. He faces charges of offenses against students by an authority figure and is held on a $25,000 bond at the Volusia County Branch Jail. If released, Gingras must comply with conditions including GPS monitoring and restricted internet access.
