New Doug Thomas Way Extension Enhances Sports Complex Connectivity

Ormond Beach recently celebrated the completion of Doug Thomas Way, a 2,150-foot roadway extension that connects Hull Road to the Ormond Beach Sports Complex. The new route provides a streamlined entry into the park, eliminating the need to navigate industrial properties along Hull Road. The project, envisioned as part of the 2005 Parks and Recreation Master Plan Study, was funded through the city’s 2021-2022 Capital Improvement Plan at a cost exceeding $900,000.

The road’s naming honors Doug Thomas, a longstanding member of the city’s Leisure Services Advisory Board and a vocal advocate for recreation in Ormond Beach since 1994. Sources close to the City Commission highlighted Thomas’s enduring commitment to community development and youth sports. City officials described the dedication as a fitting tribute to his decades of service and influence on the city’s recreational landscape.

Deputies Rescue Giant Ocean Sunfish Stranded Near Ponce Inlet

Deputies from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office recently orchestrated the rescue of a stranded Mola Mola, or ocean sunfish, near Ponce Inlet. The large, flat fish, one of the ocean’s heaviest species, became stuck in shallow water along the shore. Witnesses alerted authorities, prompting a swift response from two deputies who fashioned a makeshift lasso to guide the fish back to deeper waters. Experts say Mola Mola fish can grow up to 14 feet tall and weigh as much as 5,000 pounds. Although their distinctive appearance might alarm onlookers, the species is generally harmless and feeds primarily on jellyfish. Marine specialists noted that while sightings near the inlet are uncommon, they do occur. Witnesses commended the deputies for their inventive approach and commitment to ensuring the creature’s safe return to its natural habitat. The incident highlighted a rare encounter between local officials and one of the ocean’s most fascinating residents.

Lake Dias Chaos: Deputies Stop Out-of-Control Boat in Heroic Rescue

Volusia County Sheriff

A dramatic boat rescue unfolded Tuesday on Lake Dias as Volusia County Sheriff's deputies and Fire Rescue personnel worked to save an unresponsive man aboard a runaway vessel. The incident began when authorities received reports of a boat spinning uncontrollably on the lake. Rescue crews quickly developed a plan to bring the situation under control.

Footage of the incident shows a Marine Unit pursuing the erratic boat and attempting to board it. When the first effort failed, the team recalibrated, waiting for the vessel to circle back. Their patience paid off as a senior rescue official successfully leaped onto the moving boat and brought it to a stop.

Emergency responders attended to the unresponsive man and transported him to shore. Authorities confirmed he is expected to recover fully. Officials commended the responders' quick thinking and courage in executing the daring rescue.
