Ormond Beach Plans for Population Boom and Infrastructure Updates

Ormond Beach is finalizing its 2045 Comprehensive Plan Update, addressing anticipated population growth and pressing infrastructure concerns. City officials reviewed the plan during a workshop on Tuesday, highlighting projections that the city’s population will rise from its current 45,140 to 63,562 by 2045. Updates to stormwater management policies and infrastructure standards are being prioritized, along with strategies to manage the increasing housing demand.
Flood mitigation dominated discussions as officials cited maintenance challenges for the city’s 27 miles of ditches and poorly managed homeowner association retention ponds. On the housing front, new developments such as Plantation Oaks and Ormond Crossings are expected to drive much of the growth, straining roadways like Granada Boulevard.
The Planning Board will review updates on February 13, with recommendations in March and commission deliberations set for April.

Malnourished Dogs Rescued from Trailer at Ormond Beach Motel

Ormond Beach Police have arrested a 36-year-old Orlando man on animal cruelty charges after finding 17 malnourished dogs confined inside a trailer outside the Econo Lodge on North U.S. 1. The discovery on February 3 was prompted by a community service officer who reported hearing barking and seeing dogs caged without food, water, or ventilation.
Using bolt cutters, officers accessed the trailer and found dogs in distress, including four adults, three juveniles, and ten puppies living in unsanitary conditions. The animals were transported to the Halifax Humane Society for care.
The suspect, Neddrick Thomas, had been staying at the motel since October but was told to leave in January due to the number of dogs. He claimed motel staff were responsible for feeding the animals during his absence. Authorities arrested him when he appeared at the police department the next day.
Beach Accident - Woman Run Over by Truck on Daytona Beach
A 71-year-old woman from New York was injured on Daytona Beach Wednesday when a truck accidentally ran over her head, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office. The incident happened near the Silver Beach Avenue beach ramp around 2:43 p.m.
The woman was seated in a beach chair when an 84-year-old driver from De Leon Springs, navigating a Chevrolet Colorado, reversed from a parking spot and unknowingly drove over the victim. Witnesses flagged down the driver, who remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
Emergency personnel transported the victim to Halifax Health Medical Center, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and reported to be in stable condition. Officials confirmed that there were no signs of driver impairment.
