Governor Orders Flags at Half-Staff to Honor Late Ormond Beach Aviator

Jonathan Campos - Facebook

Flags will be lowered in Volusia County on Tuesday, February 11, to honor Capt. Jonathan Campos, an Ormond Beach pilot who died in a devastating January 29 crash near Washington, D.C. Campos was piloting American Eagle Flight 5342 when it collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter. The crash claimed 67 lives, including the helicopter crew and all passengers aboard Campos' flight.

Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered flags at local and state buildings in Volusia County to fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset as a tribute to Campos and the other victims. Campos, a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, had been with PSA Airlines for eight years, earning the rank of captain in 2022. Known for his dedication and love for aviation, Campos was remembered by colleagues and community members as a positive force who brought warmth and professionalism to every flight.

OPINION
Ormond Beach Ends Fluoridation of City Water, Citing Evolving Science

By Duncan Demarsh

The Ormond Beach City Commission has voted unanimously to stop adding fluoride to the city's water supply, following a growing trend among Florida municipalities. Officials cited evolving research on the necessity and safety of fluoridation as a key factor in the decision.

Fluoride has been used in public water systems since the mid-20th century to combat tooth decay. However, recent studies, including one by the Cochrane Library, suggest that its effectiveness has waned due to improved dental care and widespread use of fluoridated products. Concerns about health risks, such as fluorosis and thyroid dysfunction, have further prompted a reevaluation of the practice.

The decision aligns with guidance from Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, who recommended discontinuing fluoride use. By removing fluoride from the water, city leaders aim to respect individual health choices and align with evolving scientific findings on dental health and public safety.

Florida Ranks Overall 20th for Education in National Study

Florida ranks 20th in education among U.S. states, according to WalletHub's recent study assessing educational attainment, school quality, and achievement disparities. The state excelled in university quality, placing 9th nationally, and earned the top ranking for the smallest gender gap in educational attainment.

However, challenges remain. Florida ranked 34th for both the percentage of high school diploma holders and racial disparities in educational achievement. It also placed 33rd for adults with an associate’s degree and 26th for bachelor's and graduate degree holders.

Massachusetts, home to prestigious institutions like MIT and Harvard, topped the list with the highest share of college graduates and one of the most accessible community college systems in the country.

The findings reveal a mixed educational landscape in Florida, suggesting that while some areas thrive, others require attention to foster broader educational advancement.
