Volusia Students Use Art to Combat Hunger in ‘Empty Bowls’ Fundraiser

Volusia County high school students are using their artistic talents to fight hunger, contributing handmade ceramic bowls to Halifax Urban Ministries' 17th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser on Feb. 22. The event at Hope Place will showcase over 200 student-crafted bowls, which attendees can take home as a symbol of the ongoing struggle against food insecurity. Proceeds will support HUM’s food distribution programs, with a goal of raising $100,000.
The fundraiser, entirely dependent on community donations, highlights the role of local engagement in addressing hunger. Students and teachers involved in the project say it has fostered a sense of social responsibility, demonstrating how art can serve a greater purpose. The bowls themselves honor the tradition of soup kitchens and stand as reminders of the challenges faced by many in Volusia and Flagler counties. Organizers emphasize that beyond fundraising, the event strengthens community ties in the fight against hunger.
Hollywood Meets NASCAR: Anthony Mackie to Kick Off Daytona 500
Actor Anthony Mackie has been named the grand marshal for the 67th Daytona 500, Daytona International Speedway officials announced. Mackie, best known for his role as Sam Wilson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will give the ceremonial command to start engines before the race begins on Sunday. His participation coincides with his upcoming lead role in Captain America: Brave New World.
Mackie, a seasoned actor with credits in The Hurt Locker, 8 Mile, and Black Mirror, joins a tradition of cultural icons who have served as Daytona 500 grand marshals. Also attending the event will be former President Donald Trump, making his second appearance at the race.
The Daytona 500 remains a centerpiece of the NASCAR season, attracting high-profile figures from sports and entertainment. Mackie’s involvement highlights the event’s broad appeal, adding a Hollywood flair to the sport’s biggest race.
Florida Lawmakers Push to Block State Park Development
A bill to protect Florida’s state parks from development cleared its first legislative hurdle, receiving unanimous approval from the Senate’s Environment and Natural Resources Committee. Sponsored by Sen. Gayle Harrell, the State Parks Preservation Act (SB 80) seeks to prohibit commercial projects such as golf courses and luxury lodges within state parks. The bill comes in response to a controversial state plan that proposed such developments last summer, which was ultimately shelved by Gov. Ron DeSantis.
The legislation mandates strict management guidelines for Florida’s 175 state parks, requiring public input and long-term conservation strategies. Environmental groups have largely supported the bill but are pushing for stronger protections to close potential loopholes. A companion House bill (HB 209) awaits consideration. If enacted, the measure would ensure that Florida’s parks remain focused on conservation and traditional outdoor recreation rather than commercial expansion.

Genova, Van Camp’s, Trader Joe’s Tuna Recalled for Safety Concerns
Tri-Union Seafoods has voluntarily recalled select canned tuna products due to a manufacturing defect that could lead to botulism contamination. The recall affects Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s brand tuna, sold at Publix, Walmart, Costco, and independent retailers in Florida and other states.
The issue involves a defective "easy pull" pull-tab lid, which may compromise the can’s seal, increasing the risk of bacterial contamination. While no illnesses have been reported, the FDA warns that botulism can produce a potentially fatal toxin under certain conditions.
Recalled products include:
Genova 7 oz. (Costco – FL, GA)
Genova 5 oz. (Publix, Walmart, Kroger, Safeway, H-E-B – multiple states)
Van Camp’s (Walmart – FL, PA, NJ)
Trader Joe’s (multiple states)
H-E-B (Texas)
Consumers should return the products for a refund or contact Tri-Union Seafoods for a retrieval kit and replacement. Consumers can contact Tri-Union Seafoods at [email protected] or 833-374-0171 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, if you have any questions or want to request replacement products.
