Volusia County Backs Incentives Over Mandates for Green Development

Volusia County has approved a voluntary low-impact development (LID) policy, offering incentives to developers who implement environmentally friendly practices. The County Council’s 6-1 vote rejects a hybrid model recommended by environmental advisers, which would have included some mandatory regulations. Instead, developers who incorporate stormwater retention, floodplain preservation, and other LID techniques can receive benefits such as increased building heights, flexible lot sizes, and reduced permit fees. While supporters argue that incentives will encourage sustainable development without discouraging investment, critics contend that voluntary measures may not be widely adopted, leaving the county vulnerable to flooding and environmental degradation. The decision reflects an ongoing debate between economic growth and environmental responsibility. Whether the incentive-driven approach will lead to significant adoption of LID practices remains to be seen as Volusia County faces increasing challenges from extreme weather and rapid development.
Nine Mainland High Students Sign College Commitments in Ceremony
Nine student-athletes from Mainland High School celebrated their college commitments on Feb. 5 in a ceremony attended by family, friends, and coaches. Seven football players will continue their careers at Florida schools, including Bethune-Cookman, St. Thomas University, Warner University, and Webber International. Two athletes, a basketball player and a volleyball player, will head to colleges in Virginia and Texas, respectively.
The event highlighted not only athletic achievements but also the support systems—parents, coaches, and mentors—that guided these students toward success. Some cited family as a driving force in their decision-making, while others emphasized personal growth and future aspirations.
Coaches reflected on the broader significance of the moment, stressing that while victories on the field are important, the ultimate goal is ensuring these athletes earn college degrees and prepare for life beyond sports. For Mainland High, National Signing Day was a celebration of both talent and perseverance.
Trader Joe’s Confirms Plans for Daytona Beach Location

Trager Joe’s GMB Page
Trader Joe’s is officially coming to Daytona Beach, with the specialty grocer set to open at Tomoka Town Center as part of a two-store retail development. The project, which also includes a HomeSense home furnishings store, has received city approval, with an estimated construction cost of $4.5 million.
While initial leasing documents did not list Trader Joe’s by name, planning records confirmed its inclusion, and company representatives have since acknowledged plans for a Daytona Beach location, though details on an opening date remain undisclosed.
The announcement comes after years of local petitions for a store, following the opening of Trader Joe’s regional distribution center in the city a decade ago. Palm Coast residents have mounted a similar campaign, but the company has no immediate plans for expansion there.
The addition of Trader Joe’s reflects Daytona Beach’s growing retail market, offering residents a highly sought-after grocery option.
