Father Lopez senior Bergyn Baliton secured two more state weightlifting titles at the Class 1A championships, bringing her total to four over her high school career. Competing in the 110-pound division, she dominated both Olympic and traditional events, winning by significant margins.

Flagler Palm Coast’s Nya Williams, a sophomore, finished second in Olympic and fourth in traditional in the Class 3A 119-pound category, leveraging tiebreakers to her advantage. Seabreeze senior Sofia James placed fourth in the Class 2A 169-pound traditional event, improving her total from last year.

Several other local lifters had strong showings, including FPC’s Madeline Brinker and Matanzas’ Ryann Parkinson. Father Lopez’s Alexa Galvedon and Victoria Viera also placed in their respective events.

With these performances, local weightlifters showcased their strength on the state’s biggest stage, setting the foundation for future success.

Proposed Bike Week Changes Stir Controversy Among Businesses, Residents

A public meeting discussing proposed changes to Bike Week and Biketoberfest rules drew backlash from business owners and residents. Held at Peabody Auditorium, the meeting addressed potential increases in business fees, expanded parking into residential areas, and the allowance of temporary tattoo artists.

Main Street business owners voiced concerns over higher fees cutting into profits, while residents opposed expanded parking, citing past disruptions and security risks. Tattoo shop operators objected to out-of-town artists setting up temporary stations, fearing negative impacts on established businesses.

City officials stated that no decisions have been made and that the proposals remain under discussion. The City Commission will review the changes in the coming months, with final decisions expected no earlier than April or May. Any new rules would take effect for Biketoberfest in October, leaving this year’s Bike Week unchanged.

Bill Jones’ Mission: Preserving History, One Building at a Time

For more than two decades, Bill Jones has been reshaping Ormond Beach’s historic downtown, restoring rather than replacing its aging structures. A 70-year-old New Yorker and longtime entrepreneur, Jones has methodically acquired properties along West Granada Boulevard, transforming them into thriving businesses while preserving the city’s heritage.

His projects include Alexander’s steakhouse, Ormond Garage, and Rose Villa, a restored 1900s inn. Unlike typical developers, Jones isn’t forcing out businesses or hiking rents—he’s creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

Jones, who also owns the auto electronics company Metra, plans to extend his revitalization efforts north to New Britain Street, incorporating mixed-use spaces. His motivation is personal, inspired by his late father’s belief that downtown Ormond Beach deserved better.

“You can have the biggest tombstone in the cemetery,” Jones says, “or you can leave behind a legacy.” His work suggests the latter.

Ormond Beach Contractor Charged with Fraud After Alleged $23K Theft

John Day Photo: Volusia County Sheriff

Ormond Beach contractor John Day has been charged with grand theft and fraud after allegedly taking a $23,027 deposit from a couple for a project he never started. The owner of Coastal Stair Company LLC, Day was hired in 2022 but failed to deliver any work, leading the couple to report the case to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

When questioned, Day claimed that Hurricane Ian had destroyed the materials stored in the basement of his rented home. However, the property owner told investigators that the home had not sustained significant damage and did not have a basement.

Day was also arrested on a separate warrant for failing to appear on a charge of contracting without certification. He was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail and later released on $31,000 bail. Authorities continue to investigate the case.
