Ormond Beach Eyes Wooded Property for Flood Control and Green Space

Photo: Volusia County Property Appraiser
A 20-acre property at Wilmette Avenue and North Center Street has caught the attention of Ormond Beach city commissioners, who are considering buying it for preservation. With a $2 million price tag, the land’s proximity to Thompson Creek could help mitigate local flooding issues, according to sources. Commissioner Travis Sargent introduced the idea during a Feb. 18 meeting, pointing out the property’s wet conditions and limited buildable space, suggesting it could be better suited as a recreational area.
Commissioners Kristin Deaton and Lori Tolland supported exploring the purchase, with Tolland noting it aligns with the city’s upcoming stormwater workshop. City Planning Director Steven Spraker mentioned that a similar property was previously purchased through the Volusia Forever program, and staff could evaluate more properties for future preservation. While no decision has been made, the property’s potential for both flood control and community use has sparked interest across the board.
Should the City of Ormond Beach purchase the Wilmette Ave property for flood mitigation and green space purposes? (Please leave a comment after voting. Results tomorrow) |
Volusia County Readies for Sand Dredging Project with USACE Pipeline Delivery
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is set to begin delivering and installing a temporary dredge pipeline starting on or near March 10 as part of a partnership with Volusia County and the Florida Inland Navigation District. This project will facilitate the dredging of approximately 900,000 cubic yards of sand from Ponce Inlet and the nearby Intracoastal Waterway navigation channels. The objective of this project is to maintain the navigation channels while using the dredged material to repair erosion damage from past storms.
To accommodate the pipeline installation, temporary adjustments to some beach access points will be necessary beginning on March 3. At this time, County contractors will begin modifications to the existing boardwalk near the control tower at Lighthouse Point Park in preparation for the arrival of the Army Corps contractor. Temporary pedestrian detour signage will be placed within the park to provide alternative points of access while work is underway.
Starting around March 10, the Beach Street vehicle access ramp in Ponce Inlet will be closed for approximately five days to provide a safe work environment for the initial installation of the dredge pipe. Additionally, during this period, pedestrian access from the park’s parking lot will be redirected to a nearby walkway. The jetty deck will also remain closed until further repairs are completed.
To maintain safety at the construction site, the public is urged to follow all signage and closures. This will help prevent accidents and ensure the efficiency of the ongoing improvements.

Volusia County Launches $7.7M Beach Restoration: How You Can Share Your Input
Volusia County is rolling out major beach restoration projects, backed by $7.7 million in funding. Locals are invited to weigh in on long-term shoreline solutions during open-house sessions on Feb. 25 at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach and Feb. 26 at Daytona Beach Shores Community Center. Each session runs from 5-7 p.m. and offers a chance to chat with staff, explore shoreline trends, and learn about beach improvements.
Restoration work kicks off in April, with Halifax Paving trucking sand from a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers storage site north of Ponce de Leon Inlet to nearby properties with county-approved easements. A second project, set for June or July, will use sand from Rattlesnake Island to restore beaches south of Sapphire Road in New Smyrna Beach. Both efforts aim to replenish sand lost during recent hurricanes, with funding from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and support from key partners.
The Cays Brings Tesla, Fresh Market, and Hyatt House to Daytona Beach

City of Daytona Beach
Daytona Beach area residents, get ready—Tesla is rolling into town! Soon, you’ll be able to buy the latest Tesla models, including the Cybertruck, and get your EV serviced without leaving the city. The Daytona Beach Planning Board is set to review plans for the new dealership on Feb. 27, but land clearing has already begun at the northeast corner of Williamson Boulevard and Mason Avenue.
The dealership will be part of The Cays, a new retail center featuring a Fresh Market grocery store, a Hyatt House extended-stay hotel, and several restaurants. Sources confirm Tesla’s involvement, with construction plans showing a 35,373-square-foot building equipped with a showroom, service and parts departments, conference rooms, and a customer lounge. Outside, there will be parking for 124 vehicles.
Developed by Paradigm Development Partners, The Cays is part of “Project Oasis Phase Two,” a larger mixed-use community by Hines that includes rental cottages and multifamily units. Stay tuned—Daytona Beach’s shopping and driving scene is about to get a major upgrade!
