After Decades, WWII Sailor’s Flag Honors His Memory in Ormond Beach

Over 80 years after his death in World War II, the burial flag of Navy Seaman Second Class William J. Magill was returned to his sister, Carol Magill Woodard, during a ceremony in Ormond Beach, Florida. The flag was discovered last November by Gary Hughes, a Goodwill Industries manager, inside a donated box originally sent to Magill’s mother in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Determined to reunite the flag with its rightful family, Hughes and Jeff Biles, both veterans, traced Woodard to Ormond Beach through the Pawtucket Police Department. The Battle of Leyte Gulf, where Magill perished, was the largest naval engagement of World War II. Woodard, whose family includes 43 veterans, plans to display the flag among other military memorabilia in her home. The ceremony honored Magill’s sacrifice, ensuring that his legacy, like the flag, is preserved and remembered.

Volusia County Eyes Farm Program to Reduce Jail Costs, Teach Trades

Volusia County officials are considering establishing an inmate work farm at the Branch Jail, aiming to reduce incarceration costs and provide inmates with practical skills. Led by County Council Vice Chair Matt Reinhart, the initiative is inspired by Manatee County’s Inmate Work Farm, which started in 1993 and now includes chicken houses, hydroponic greenhouses, pig farming, and fish production. Reinhart, a former Volusia County corrections warden, believes the program could support rehabilitation, particularly for inmates with mental health challenges. A disused recreation yard at the jail has been proposed as a potential site, with funding potentially sourced from grants and the Inmate Welfare Fund. With recent improvements in jail staffing, county staff are expected to present implementation options within three months. Reinhart is also promoting inmate job fairs to support reentry into the workforce, with the next event scheduled for March 13, hosted by the Port Orange South Daytona Chamber of Commerce.

NASA Selects SpaceX for Mission to Track Hazardous Asteroids

NASA has partnered with SpaceX to launch the NEO Surveyor mission in fall 2027, aiming to detect and track near-Earth objects (NEOs) that could threaten Earth. Equipped with infrared detectors, the mission will scan space for large asteroids capable of causing widespread destruction. While the odds of a major impact are low, NASA emphasizes the importance of early detection. The mission builds on NASA’s 2022 DART mission, which demonstrated that a spacecraft can alter an asteroid’s path. Scientists are currently monitoring asteroid 2024 YR4, which has a less than 1% chance of approaching Earth in 2032. The NEO Surveyor’s $100 million budget is part of NASA’s broader planetary defense strategy, with SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket set to carry the spacecraft into orbit, reinforcing efforts to prevent future cosmic threats.

Microsoft Improves Accessibility, File Sharing, and Start Menu in Windows 11 Beta

Microsoft is testing improvements to Windows 11’s interface in preview build 22635.4950, now available in the Beta channel. The update introduces a streamlined file sharing menu that appears when dragging a file from a desktop folder, allowing quick sharing through apps like WhatsApp, My Phone, and Microsoft Teams. The Start menu’s “All apps” page now offers two additional layouts: Grid view, which maintains alphabetical ordering while displaying more apps to reduce scrolling, and Category view, which groups apps by usage with frequently used apps highlighted. File Explorer has also received improved text size scaling for File Open, Save, and Wizard dialog boxes to enhance accessibility. With bug fixes and known issues acknowledged, these features are expected to move to the Release Preview channel soon, signaling their imminent release to all Windows 11 users.
