Three students received $1,000 scholarships as part of the Spring 2025 L. Gale Lemerand Entrepreneurial Speaker Series, aimed at fostering business innovation. The recipients include Autumn Brooke Demarest, a Mainland High School student expanding her confectionary business; Laura Suskey, a Daytona State College student investing in her salon and spa career; and Dominique King, a DSC student developing an online tech academy for children. The scholarships, awarded based on academic performance and faculty recommendations, are funded by philanthropist and entrepreneur L. Gale Lemerand, who has supported approximately 80 aspiring business owners through this initiative.

Flouridation Poll Results

Comments:

  • No, "The town my kids grew up in didn’t fluoridate their water and their teeth are fine… and they are in their mid-50s. Brush, brush, brush."

  • No, "Since 1945, fluoride has been widely accepted in the U.S. as 'safe and effective,' but is it really? The documentary Fluoride: Poison on Tap questions the long-running addition of industrial waste in our drinking water."

  • No, "Fluoride can be applied by other sources for those who want it—dental offices, toothpaste, etc. Subjecting all of us to it in the water supply is ridiculous! There are enough other contaminants in our water as is."

  • No, "Toothpaste has fluoride—no need for it in the water."

  • No, "How many people actually drink tap water nowadays? Most people, including children, drink bottled beverages. Maybe fluoridation should be added there instead."

  • Yes, "Politics and public health don’t belong together. Follow the science, not the quack."

  • No, "Multiple studies have found that fluoridation in our water supply does not prevent cavities."

  • No, "There's enough fluoride in toothpaste. No one should be drinking it. Period."

  • Yes, "Yes, to fluoridation."

  • Yes, "The FL surgeon general is dangerously not fact- or science-based in most of his decisions or advisements."

  • Yes, "Follow the science, not politicians."

  • Yes, "I work in healthcare and have seen the benefits of fluoride in our water. Without it, we’ll see more cavities and tooth decay in children. Parents will bear the cost, and insurance companies will react by dropping patients."

  • Yes, "I moved from an area with fluoridated water to well water when I was six and developed numerous cavities afterward. I’ve always believed fluoride protected my teeth before the move."

  • No, "Fluoride in water for teeth concerns is ridiculous. Use toothpaste instead. There’s a reason I don’t drink or cook with tap water—I never get cavities."

  • Yes, "This was a poor health decision from the start, driven by political bias. As a nurse practitioner for over 46 years, I find this action reprehensible."

Home Health Nurse Accused of Repeatedly Beating Disabled Patient

Photo: Volusia County Jail

A Daytona Beach home health nurse, John Jenkins, 68, was arrested for allegedly abusing a disabled Palm Coast man who cannot speak or walk. Surveillance footage reportedly captured multiple instances of Jenkins striking, kicking, and physically assaulting the victim. A concerned family member, who initially overheard aggression and later reviewed security footage, reported the abuse. Additional videos allegedly revealed over 25 instances of mistreatment. Jenkins was arrested on Feb. 21 and later released on a $40,000 bond. The Florida Department of Children and Families has launched an investigation.

Evolving Bike Week Attracts Bigger Crowds and New Demographics

AI Image

Daytona Beach is preparing for a busy Bike Week 2025, with large crowds expected due to favorable weather and increasing corporate sponsorships. Brands like Harley-Davidson and Progressive Insurance are helping expand the event's reach to younger and more diverse attendees. Geofencing technology will again track attendance, following 2024’s recorded 423,300 unique visitors. Security remains a top priority, with local and federal agencies coordinating efforts. Despite commercial changes, the event's tradition remains strong, and local businesses are optimistic about a robust turnout.
