Infrastructure Improvements to Temporarily Close L.B. Knox Bridge and Highbridge Road Beginning March 17

Courtesy Photo
Volusia County will temporarily close the L.B. Knox Bridge and Highbridge Road in Ormond Beach from March 17 through May 1 for scheduled bridge deck repairs and road resurfacing to improve the functionality of these infrastructure components. These improvements will ensure the continued efficiency and reliability of this transportation route, supporting smooth travel for residents and visitors. During this period, the stretch of Highbridge Road from Walter Boardman Lane to the bridge will not be accessible to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Situated in northeast Volusia County, the L.B. Knox Bridge spans the Halifax River and forms part of the northern section of the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail. To navigate around the closure, travelers can use the Granada Bridge on State Road 40 in Ormond Beach or State Road 100 in Flagler Beach. Residents along Highbridge Road may access their homes via Walter Boardman Lane. Officials will post detour signs and closure notices along the affected routes to inform the public. The construction may cause minimal disruptions to boat traffic on the Halifax River. Efforts will be made to minimize any inconvenience, ensuring the waterway will remain open to navigation throughout the construction period.

Votran Adjusts Services and Routes to Accommodate Bike Week Traffic

Photo: Volusia County
To accommodate increased traffic congestion during Bike Week, Votran will implement temporary route modifications from Friday, February 28, through Sunday, March 9. Riders should anticipate potential delays, service interruptions, and additional detours based on real-time traffic conditions.
Daytime Service (Monday – Saturday)
Route 1: Buses will bypass the Beachside Intermodal Transit Facility (ITF) and remain on A1A.
Route 8: Service will remain on Halifax Avenue, skipping the Beachside ITF.
Route 11A/B: Outbound buses will avoid Thames Road, Fentress Boulevard, and the Daytona Flea & Farmers Market. Riders traveling west of Williamson Boulevard should use Route 60.
Route 17A/B: Buses will detour via Palmetto Avenue and International Speedway Boulevard.
DeLand-Area Detours (Saturday, March 1)
Due to the DeLand Bike Rally, Route 34 will follow a modified path, bypassing Rich Avenue.
Night Service (Monday – Saturday) and Daytime Service (Sunday)
All night and Sunday routes will begin and end at the Transfer Plaza, avoiding the Beachside ITF.
Route 1, Route 10S, Route 11N, Route 15, and Route 17 will follow adjusted routes to minimize congestion impacts.
Votran advises passengers to plan ahead and use the myStop mobile app or visit Votran.org for real-time tracking and service updates.

Holly Hill Fire Traps Elderly Woman as Firefighters Struggle to Reach Her
A 95-year-old woman died in an early morning house fire in Holly Hill, despite rescue efforts from a former mayor and firefighters. The blaze broke out around 2:30 a.m. at a home on Eagle Drive, where a live-in caregiver awoke to heavy smoke. Unable to reach the elderly woman, the caregiver sought help from her father, a former city mayor, but their attempts to enter were thwarted by the flames.
Fire crews arrived to find the home fully engulfed. As firefighters attempted to reach the back room where the woman was located, a sudden flare-up forced them to retreat. A secondary team later accessed the room, but she was already deceased.
A dog also perished in the fire, though a cat managed to escape. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Daytona State College Investigates Accidental Shooting at Police Academy
Daytona State College officials are investigating an accidental shooting at the school’s police academy, where an instructor was wounded in a classroom incident earlier this week.
According to 911 records released by the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, the shooting occurred Monday in Classroom 237 at the academy’s facility on Technology Boulevard in Daytona Beach. A caller, identifying himself as an officer, reported that a firearm accidentally discharged, striking the instructor in the groin. A medic on site provided immediate assistance.
The college acknowledged the incident but did not release further details, and Daytona Beach police have not yet responded to requests for information. The weapon involved was identified as a Ruger pistol.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, and officials have not commented on whether any safety protocols or disciplinary measures will be reviewed as the investigation continues.
