Daytona Beach Woman Sentenced in Husband’s Death Amid End-of-Life Debate

Ellen Gilland, 77, was sentenced to 366 days in state prison and 12 years of probation for fatally shooting her terminally ill husband, Jerry Gilland, in his hospital room at AdventHealth in Daytona Beach. She had pleaded no contest to the charges and had been free on bond since March 2023. Authorities stated that after the shooting, Gilland pointed the gun at hospital staff and fired in the direction of police officers before being taken into custody.
Judge Kathryn Weston credited her with 40 days of time served and ordered her to write letters of apology to those affected. She must also complete community service after her release.
The case has sparked debate over end-of-life choices, with supporters rallying outside the courthouse. Her attorney described her as deeply remorseful, emphasizing that her actions were driven by love and distress over her husband’s suffering.
Mystic Lobster Roll Co. Brings New England Flavor to Daytona Beach

Mystic Lobster Roll Co. is set to open its first Volusia County location at the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort, with an anticipated launch in April. Franchise owners Juan Santamaria and Ramona Ricart, experienced in the food industry, relocated to Florida last year and see Daytona Beach as an ideal market.
The restaurant will feature Maine and Connecticut-style lobster rolls, specialty options like the Deep South roll, and lobster tacos. Beverages will include beer, wine, and New Jersey Boardwalk Fresh Squeezed Lemonade. Guests will have access to outdoor seating, poolside service, and beach delivery.
Mystic Lobster Roll Co., founded in New Jersey, has expanded throughout Florida and will also operate a concession stand at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. While the couple is considering a future West Palm Beach location, their current focus is on Daytona Beach, where they will hire three employees and operate daily from 11 a.m. to 8 or 9 p.m.
Pine Trail Elementary Runners Shine in Annual Pioneer Mile
Pine Trail Elementary students laced up their running shoes for the annual Pioneer Mile, a school tradition for over 30 years. Held on Feb. 28, the race saw 139 students qualify—84 boys and 55 girls—marking an increase from the previous year.
The event, established by former coach James Vollinger, requires boys to run a mile in eight minutes or less and girls in nine minutes or less to participate. This year, fourth-grader Espn Haines nearly broke the school record, finishing in 5 minutes and 59 seconds—just two seconds shy of the best time ever recorded. His sister, third-grader Breckland Haines, won the girls’ race with a time of 6:45.
The Pioneer Mile remains a beloved tradition at Pine Trail Elementary, encouraging students to challenge themselves physically and celebrate their achievements in endurance and speed.
Volusia County Seeks Providers for 2025 Summer Camp Program
Volusia County’s Community Assistance Division is accepting applications from nonprofits, schools, churches, and municipalities to serve as summer camp providers for the 2025 summer camp scholarship program. Camps must operate Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for at least six weeks between June 2 and August 8, offering supervised recreation, sports, arts, and field trips for children ages 5 to 14. Camps focused on special needs children may accept participants up to age 17.
Scholarships will be available for children from families earning up to 200% of the federal poverty level. Providers will be reimbursed per child based on attendance, within the county’s set rate.
Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on March 21 at www.volusia.org/scs. First-time applicants must attend a training on March 6. The Children and Families Advisory Board will review applications in April.
