“Big Lot’s!” in Ormond May Remain Open

Courtesy Big Lots!
Big Lots, the discount retail chain that had previously announced plans to close all locations following its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, will remain in business—at least in part. The company has reached an agreement that will allow 200 to 400 stores, along with one or two distribution centers, to continue operations under new ownership.
In December 2024, Big Lots finalized a deal with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners to transfer a portion of its stores to Variety Wholesalers, which plans to keep them open under the Big Lots brand. This decision marks a significant shift from the company's initial liquidation strategy and is expected to preserve jobs and maintain the brand’s presence in multiple communities.
The specifics of which locations will remain operational are still being finalized. However, the move signals a more stable future for the retailer, which has faced mounting financial difficulties in recent years.
Here is tentative list of Florida stores proposed to remain open:
843 W. Bloomingdale Ave., Brandon, FL
225 S. Tyndall Pkwy., Callaway, FL
146 SE U.S. Highway 19, Crystal River, FL
4901 Palm Beach Blvd. Ste. 230, Fort Myers, FL
9119 Merrill Rd, Ste 50, Jacksonville, FL
4700 Highway 90, Marianna, FL
6247 Highway 90, Milton, FL
13970 N. Cleveland Ave., North Fort Myers, FL
122 S. Nova Rd., Ormond Beach, FL
3048 E. College Ave., Ruskin, FL
2384 Commercial Way, Spring Hill, FL

Rabies Alert Issued in Ormond Beach Following Confirmed Case
The Florida Department of Health in Volusia County has issued a rabies alert for Ormond Beach after a confirmed case in an unvaccinated cat near Collins Street and Hand Avenue on February 26. The alert, effective for 60 days, covers an area extending from Clyde Morris Boulevard to the west, South Center and South Orchard streets to the east, State Road 40 to the north, and Golf Avenue to the south.
Health officials warn that rabies remains active in the local wildlife population, posing a risk to both humans and domestic animals. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, urging residents to vaccinate pets, avoid contact with wild or stray animals, and secure outdoor food sources that may attract potential carriers such as raccoons, bats, and foxes.
Residents are advised to report any animal bites or suspicious wildlife encounters to DOH-Volusia or local animal control authorities. Immediate medical attention is recommended for anyone bitten or scratched by a potentially rabid animal.
Precautions also extend to homeowners, who are encouraged to prevent wildlife from entering living spaces to reduce the risk of exposure. The county continues to stress that post-exposure treatment is highly effective when administered promptly after an incident.
Further updates and guidelines can be found at FloridaHealth.gov/Rabies or by contacting DOH-Volusia at 386-274-0634.
Ormond Beach Church Expands Outreach with New Tomoka Care Facility
Tomoka Christian Church in Ormond Beach has officially broken ground on the Tomoka Care Facility, a 20,000-square-foot, two-story building that will expand the church’s food pantry, thrift store, and administrative offices. Approved by the Ormond Beach City Commission in April 2024, the project marks a long-awaited expansion of the church’s outreach programs.
The new facility will double the size of the food pantry, which serves over 400 families monthly, and provide space for A Second Blessing thrift store, which assists the homeless and families recovering from disasters. The additional administrative offices will allow the church to expand worship seating and children’s ministry programs.
The March 3 groundbreaking ceremony was attended by city officials and church leaders, who praised the project’s impact on the community. Once completed, the Tomoka Care Facility will strengthen the church’s role as a local and global support network for those in need.
