City Commissioners Address Backlash Over Proposed Media Rules

Ormond Beach officials are seeking to move beyond a controversy over Mayor Jason Leslie’s recent media appearances, which some residents viewed as an attempt to censor him. The dispute arose after city commissioners proposed requiring a majority vote before any elected official could speak on behalf of the city. The move followed concerns that Leslie’s televised segment showcasing Ormond Beach was not properly coordinated with city staff.

Residents were divided at a March 4 meeting—some praised the mayor’s outreach, while others defended the commission’s efforts to maintain accurate messaging. Commissioners insisted the issue was about clarity, not censorship. They also voiced frustration over the media attention detracting from city priorities, such as land conservation efforts.

Leslie, in his closing remarks, urged cooperation, emphasizing the need to work together for the city’s best interests. The commission now aims to put the matter to rest and refocus on governance.

Ormond Beach’s John Phillips Named New President of Palm Coast-Flagler Chamber

The Palm Coast-Flagler Regional Chamber of Commerce has named John Phillips as its new president, succeeding Greg Blose and interim leader Howard Holley. An Ormond Beach resident, Phillips brings extensive experience in athletics administration and business leadership, having spent 27 years at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, including a decade as Athletic Director. Most recently, he served as CEO of Pictona, a major pickleball facility in Holly Hill.

Phillips acknowledged the challenge of fully acquainting himself with Flagler County’s business environment but emphasized his eagerness to engage with the community. He cited the economic overlap between Volusia and Flagler counties as an asset in his transition.

As president, Phillips will report to the Chamber’s Board of Directors, which includes key regional business leaders. His appointment signals a strategic focus on strengthening local commerce and fostering economic growth in the Flagler County region.

Joy Luck Brand Dried Lily Flowers Recalled Over Undeclared Sulfites

U.S. Trading Company of Hayward, California, has recalled Joy Luck Brand Dried Lily Flowers due to undeclared sulfites, which could pose a serious health risk to individuals with allergies or sensitivities. The affected 2.5-ounce packages were distributed to retailers nationwide.

The recall was initiated after the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services detected sulfites in a sample of the product, which were not listed on the packaging. While no illnesses have been reported, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been notified of the recall.

Consumers who purchased the recalled product are urged not to consume it and to either dispose of it or return it for a full refund. Those with questions can contact U.S. Trading Company at 510-781-1818 during business hour.
