Circuit Judge Leah R. Case has been re-elected to serve another two-year term as chief judge of Florida’s Seventh Judicial Circuit, covering Flagler, Putnam, St. Johns, and Volusia counties. Her term will begin July 1, continuing her administrative oversight of the circuit.

Alongside her leadership role, Case will maintain her responsibilities on the bench, presiding over felony cases in Daytona Beach. A judge since 2010, she has experience in dependency, civil, and felony dockets, with her current focus in the criminal division.

A graduate of the University of Florida, Case has built a judicial career marked by experience and service. Sources say she looks forward to the challenges and responsibilities that come with leading one of Florida’s largest circuits while continuing her commitment to justice on the bench.

Seabreeze Students Gain Real-World Experience Through CTE Programs

Seabreeze High School’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs are preparing students for careers in digital media and video production. Senior Tyler Lewis discovered his passion for videography through the Digital Video Technology program, where he has gained hands-on experience capturing live events. Meanwhile, senior Rebecca Morrow found her career path through the Digital Media/Multimedia Design program, earning Adobe certifications and becoming editor-in-chief of the yearbook.

These programs are part of a broader effort in Volusia County Schools, which offers 56 CTE programs and 37 career academies, with nearly all providing industry certifications. Last year, students earned 4,410 industry-recognized credentials across the district.

Recently, Seabreeze students applied their skills by documenting the Mr. and Miss Seabreeze competition, set to be showcased on April 9. With hands-on learning and real-world applications, Seabreeze’s CTE programs are shaping career-ready students for the future.

Fraudulent Research Misled Alzheimer’s Science for Nearly Two Decades

A 2006 study that shaped two decades of Alzheimer’s research has been retracted after forensic analysis uncovered manipulated data, calling into question the foundation of one of the field’s most dominant theories. The study, which introduced Aß*56, a specific form of amyloid beta, suggested it played a key role in memory loss. However, independent investigators found that crucial images were altered, raising doubts about whether the protein even exists.

The retraction is a devastating blow to Alzheimer’s research. Drug companies and funding agencies funneled billions into amyloid-targeting treatments, yet clinical trials consistently failed to yield meaningful results. Experts now argue that this fixation on amyloid plaques—based largely on flawed research—may have diverted attention from other potential causes of the disease, such as inflammation and metabolic dysfunction.

The fraudulent study, published in Nature, was led by neuroscientist Sylvain Lesné at the University of Minnesota. Forensic analyses by multiple experts confirmed manipulated images in the paper, leading to widespread concerns about scientific oversight. Despite these findings, an internal university review failed to conclude that research misconduct had occurred, fueling debates about institutional bias and the need for independent investigations.

Patients and families who have relied on treatments rooted in this faulty research have been left questioning how such a deception went unchecked for nearly 20 years. Many Alzheimer’s researchers are now reassessing previous studies influenced by the fraudulent findings, while journals face scrutiny for allowing manipulated data to pass peer review.

With the retraction of this once-revered study, the Alzheimer’s research community is confronting a reckoning—not just in correcting past mistakes, but in ensuring greater transparency and accountability in the future of medical science.
