Heroes Among Us: Road and Bridge Supervisors Save a Life

Not all heroes wear capes—some wear work boots and hard hats! Two Volusia County Road and Bridge supervisors, Adam Cozier and Shawn McKlem, jumped into action when a laborer collapsed at the Public Works Northeast Services Facility in Daytona Beach. Thanks to their CPR training, they were able to restore the man's pulse before emergency services arrived. Their quick thinking and fast response ultimately saved a life. County Manager George Rectenwald praised their efforts, emphasizing the importance of hands-only CPR training. Source: Ormond Observer

A Poolside Heist Gone Wrong

Meanwhile, in Ormond Beach, a 40-year-old Texas man decided to test his luck as an impromptu furniture mover—except the furniture wasn’t his. Hotel staff reported the man attempted to lift pool chairs over a fence, but his plan fell apart when security intervened. After an aggressive exchange, the chair thief fled, only to be arrested moments later for having alcohol on the beach. Turns out, the chairs stayed put, and so did the consequences. Revved Up and Rolling Out: Bike Week 2025 Wraps Up

As the engines quiet down, Bike Week 2025 comes to an end in Daytona Beach. With over 420,000 visitors, thanks to new geofencing technology, the event saw mixed reactions. Some businesses thrived, while others noted a slight dip in midweek attendance. However, international visitors were a bright spot, with guests from Europe and beyond fueling the festival’s global appeal. Organizers remain optimistic, though a few local merchants wouldn’t mind a little more spending power from the crowds. Source: Daytona News-Journal

Biker Brawl Turns Violent in New Smyrna Beach

Not all motorcycle meetups end with a friendly handshake. A confrontation between rival biker clubs, the Mongols and the Warlocks, at a New Smyrna Beach gas station quickly escalated into a full-blown brawl, complete with gunfire and nunchucks. Several members were injured, and authorities later arrested a suspect connected to the shooting. While the cause of the altercation remains unclear, it’s safe to say tensions ran high—and so did the police response. Source: Daytona News-Journal

Social Security Shake-Up: New Policy Sparks Concern

In a major policy reversal, the Social Security Administration is bringing back full withholding for overpayment recovery. This means that instead of deducting a manageable 10% from monthly checks, SSA will now withhold 100% until debts are repaid. Critics argue this will devastate vulnerable Americans, with some even fearing homelessness. Attorney Jen Burdick called the move "cruel," while Congressman Darren Soto suggested that legislative action might be on the horizon. For now, many affected individuals are left wondering how they’ll make ends meet. Source: WFTV.com
