Ormond Beach Pedals Toward a New Bike Path
For those who prefer exploring nature on two wheels, Ormond Beach is working to expand its network of pedestrian and bicycle paths! City officials are seeking grant funding for a $1.7 million mixed-use path on Hand Avenue, connecting Williamson Boulevard to Clyde Morris Boulevard. The goal? To make east-west travel safer and easier for bikers and walkers alike.

Assistant City Manager Shawn Finley emphasized that this path is part of a broader effort to improve Ormond Beach’s trail system, as outlined in the city's 2016 Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan. Other projects in the pipeline include a North U.S. 1 path and the Thompson Creek Trail Project, which will eventually connect Central Park to Sanchez Park. If all goes to plan, cyclists and pedestrians will have even more scenic routes to enjoy in the coming years! Source: Ormond Observer

Countdown to Liftoff: NASA's Crew-10 Heads to Space!
Get ready for an out-of-this-world event! Four astronauts are set to launch from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center tonight, Wednesday, March 12, at 7:48 p.m. as part of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-10 mission. Their journey to the International Space Station (ISS) C after a lengthy delay caused by safety concerns with their Boeing Starliner capsule. Turns out helium leaks and thruster problems are a bit of a deal-breaker when you’re floating in space!

Once aboard the ISS, Crew-10 will roll up their zero-gravity sleeves and tackle more than 200 experiments, including crucial flammability tests for future spacecraft. They’ll also chat with students via ham radio and put a “backup lunar navigation system” to the test. Talk about multitasking! Plus, they’re volunteering as human test subjects to help NASA better understand how space affects the body and mind—prepping for future deep-space missions. The mission’s stellar team includes NASA astronauts Anne McClain (Commander) and Nichole Ayers (Pilot), alongside Japanese mission specialist Takuya Onishi and Russian cosmonaut Kirill Peskov. An Early Bird—or Rather, an Early Turtle—Surprises Beachgoers!
Meanwhile, back on Earth, a special visitor made an unexpected early appearance in Volusia County! A leatherback sea turtle was spotted nesting in New Smyrna Beach—nearly two months ahead of the official Florida nesting season. Jackie Frymire, a lucky early-morning beach walker, discovered the turtle as she finished covering her eggs before heading back into the ocean. With no tracking tags and no official name (we're open to suggestions!), this mystery mama left behind what is now the earliest recorded nest in the county.

Beach officials quickly marked the site to protect it, reminding the public that disturbing a turtle nest can result in hefty fines—or even jail time! Leatherback sea turtles are fascinating creatures, ranking as the largest turtle species on the planet and one of the few warm-blooded reptiles. These jellyfish-loving giants face plenty of human-made threats, including artificial lights that can mislead hatchlings and ocean pollution that can turn plastic bags into deadly snacks. Though their lifespan is still a mystery, estimates range from 30 years to over a century! Source: News Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach Airport’s Emergency Drill—Don’t Panic!
Finally, if you live near Daytona Beach International Airport, don’t be alarmed on Thursday, March 13, when sirens blare, smoke rises, and emergency responders rush into action. It’s all part of a full-scale emergency response exercise running from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This triennial drill, required by the FAA, is designed to test the airport’s disaster readiness.

With more than 225 participants and 25 local agencies involved—including fire departments, law enforcement, hospitals, and emergency medical teams—the drill will simulate a major incident requiring rapid response and coordination. Volunteers from the University of Central Florida and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will even play the roles of victims. The airport will remain open, so travelers need not worry—just be prepared for a little extra excitement in the area! Source: Ormond Observer
