WARNING! - FBI Scam Targets Grieving Widow
A New Smyrna Beach woman, still mourning the loss of her husband, became the victim of an elaborate scam that drained her of $20,000. The fraudsters posed as FBI agents, convincing her that hackers had infiltrated her bank account and that the only way to safeguard her money was to transfer it into a Bitcoin ATM. Tearful and panicked, she followed their step-by-step instructions, only to realize too late that she had been swindled. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office has reported a growing number of cryptocurrency-related scams, with criminals using digital currency’s untraceable nature to disappear with victims' funds. The takeaway? If someone asks you to withdraw large sums of cash and deposit them into a Bitcoin machine, run the other way!

Land Ho! School Property in the Crosshairs
A new bill in the Florida House is making waves, and Volusia County schools are in the splash zone. House Bill 443 could put an end to land banking, requiring districts with five years of declining enrollment to sell off their unused properties. And who gets first dibs? Charter schools. Volusia County School Board members are packing their bags for Tallahassee to have their say. School Board Chair Jamie Haynes isn't thrilled about the prospect of losing local control over land decisions, arguing that these assets should remain in the district's hands for when (not if) they’re needed. The bill has stirred debate over school choice and funding, and the conversation is far from over.

First Arrest Made In NSB Bike Week Brawl
A typical stop at a gas station during Daytona Beach Bike Week turned into an all-out brawl and shootout in New Smyrna Beach. The melee at a RaceTrac station on SR-44 left two gang members with bullet wounds and another seeing stars after a nunchuck attack. The first arrest has been made: 41-year-old Clinton Walker, a member of the Mongols motorcycle gang, was taken into custody for inciting a riot, aggravated assault, and discharging a firearm in public. Law enforcement is keeping a close eye on the feud between the Mongols and their rivals, the Warlocks. Thankfully, no innocent bystanders were injured, but it’s safe to say this year’s Bike Week made a lasting impression.

Holly Hill Distillery’s Bitter Aftertaste
Copper Bottom Craft Distillery in Holly Hill made a heroic pivot in 2020, swapping rum production for hand sanitizer to help the community during the pandemic. Fast forward five years, and that decision is now hitting their bottom line hard. The distillery's aging process means that the barrels that should be ready for sale now… well, they don’t exist. Instead of the usual 15 barrels of premium spirits, they have only two. Owners Jeremy and Jenny Craig remain optimistic, working to fill the gap with other products, but the shortage is a reminder that even good deeds can come with unforeseen consequences. Here’s hoping they find a way to raise a glass to better days ahead.
